NCAA Championships Underway

The Flying Dutchmen are near the middle of the pack after the first day of competition at the NCAA III golf championships in Hershey, Pa. In a field of 37 teams, coach Bob Ebels' Dutchmen are tied for 20th place. The first-day leader is Skidmore, N.Y. ate 295 strokes. Hope ended 21 strokes off the pace. Wednesday's second round will trim the field to 23 teams for the final 36 holes of play on Thursday and Friday.
The tournament is being played on two courses. Coach Bob Ebels said his team played on the tougher of the two courses, the par 71 Hershey CC-East, and that the entire round was impacted by rain, wind and cold temperatures.
The first round individual leader is Tain Lee of Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, Calif. at 69 strokes. Hope was led by senior captain Steven Strock at 38-36--74. Scores of other Hope golfers were Charles Olson 41-42--83, Chris Ansel 39-38-77, and Andy Thomson 41-41--82.
A fifth Hope golfer, Nick Campbell, was disqualified during the round. According to coach Ebels, Campbell reported to officials an error he had made after playing a provisional ball that was not of the same manufacturer's brand as the ball he started the round with. Campbell had been unable to find the original ball after hitting it into the woods. He took a provisional ball from his bag and it wasn't until after he hit it that he realized his error. He self-reported the error to NCAA officials who by rule disqualified him from the round.He will be able to continue play on Wednesday. "Golf is a game of honor," noted Ebels. "I applaud Nick for this act of honesty."
Appearing at nationals for the seventh time in school history, the team is seeking improve upon its highest finish of 17th place.

All-MIAA Honors Announced;
Hope Sprinter is Voted MVP
Eleven Hope track and field athletes have been awarded all-conference honors by the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA).
Highlighting the honors is the selection of junior Cameron Lampkin [pictured] of Oak Park (Berkley HS) as the league's outstanding male track performer. Lampkin was the conference champion in the 100 and 200 meter dashes. The last time a Hope sprinter received MVP recognition was 1986.
Three athletes are receiving All-MIAA honors for a third consecutive year -- senior Jeffrey Minkus of Glen Elyn, Ill. (Glenbard West HS), junior Nick Rinck of Hudsonville (Hudsonville HS), and junior Kara Vandeguchte of Hamilton (Hamilton HS).
Honored for a second time are junior John Donkersloot of Zeeland (Zeeland East HS) and senior Aaron Treiber of Auburn (Valley Lutheran HS). First-time honorees include freshman Elliott Barney of South Holland, Ill. (Seton Academy HS), senior Bryan DeKoekkoek of Martin (Kalamazoo Christian HS), freshman Shaelie Harper of Holland (Holland HS), freshman Taylor Mattarella of Traverse City (Traverse City Central HS), and sophomore Sarah Venlet of Zeeland (Holland Christian HS).
Both Hope teams finished second in the MIAA standings as athletes captured the gold medal in 13 events. The teams are coached by Kevin Cole.
