BASEBALL Flying Dutchmen Finish Sweep Over BritonsHope 10, Albion 2 / Hope 14, Albion 2The Flying Dutchmen concluded conference play on a winning note Monday defeating Albion twice to complete a four-game sweep of the series, 10-2 and 14-2. Winning their last seven games of the regular season, coach Stu Fritz's Dutchmen clinched second place outright in the MIAA standings. The team has a 28-12 record and will now wait until next weekend to see if a bid to the NCAA tournament is in their future.
Scoring 10-or-more runs for the 11th and 12th times this season, the Flying Dutchmen set a single season scoring record with 325 runs. The previous mark was 320 runs by the 2002 team.
In the opener sophomore Adam Clements (5-2) went the distance allowing six hits while striking out eight and walking none. Hope's 10 hits were all singles led by Scott Snyder, Robby Poll and Jon Ponte with two apiece.
Hope opened the nightcap with five first inning runs and capped the game with seven in the fourth. Sophomore Danny Detmar (5-2) pitched five shutout innings with relief help from Steve Tompkins and Michael Dekker. Hope's nine hits were spread across nine batters. Over the doubleheader Albion pitchers hit Hope batters 14 times. |
