Adventure Goals

"Life is not measured by the breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away."

                --Author Unknown

I've just returned from a month of traveling and I'm happy to be home for the start of the holiday season.  As I mentioned last week, I set out to accomplish the first goal of my 49th year by attempting to surf at Del Mar beach in California.  Attempting is the operative word.  When I met my Hay House crew - JT, Steve, and Emily, at the beach, I found rough seas, plenty of waves, and more surfers than I've ever seen in my life.  I could tell right away this wasn't going to be easy.

My promise to myself was to show up and give surfing a try regardless of whether or not I could stand up on the board.  So, I started by getting into a wet suit (trust me, this is a sport of its own) so I could then practice jumping up onto the board while still on the shore.  Then we headed for the water.

After a few attempts at trying to manage the long board in the rough surf, I was able to get up on my knees, before crashing into the waves.  I felt hopeful for a brief moment before reality set in.  Instead of riding the waves, I spent the next thirty minutes doing my best to avoid getting clobbered by the board :-).  It was exhausting and exhilarating all at the same time and I can't wait to try it again when I'm back in San Diego for the next "I Can Do It" conference in early May.

As my surfing trip unfolded, here's what I learned when it comes to setting adventurous, "bucket list" type goals:

  • Showing up is a worthwhile goal in and of itself.
  • Let go of any expectations and simply focus on having fun.  Enjoy the ride.
  • When appropriate, put yourself in the hands of a competent teacher and take pleasure in being a student.
  • Always have a camera handy (I'd share a few photos with you but you'd only see body parts sticking out of the water).

Most of all, share your adventure with special people.  Along with Steve, JT, and Emily, my friends Chris and Melissa joined in the fun by cheering me on from the beach.  It was great to see their smiling faces each time I popped up for air.

I'll be sure to keep you posted on the next adventure. In the meantime, I'm off to rest my weary bones.  I wish you all a very Happy Thanksgiving!

If you were to set one adventurous goal for the holiday season, what might it be?  Maybe you're ready to take a break from the traditional gatherings and do something completely out of the ordinary?  Or, you might cook an unusual meal for your family.  Better yet, challenge yourself to think big.  What could you do that would take your breath away?
