Topic of the Week: Dow Jones
"There are no tough times, hard knocks, or challenges that aren't laden with emeralds, rubies, and diamonds for those who see them through."
What
a week it's been. On Friday, I had
several conversations with people who are frightened about the welfare of our
world, panicked about losing their hard-earned savings, and deeply concerned
about the future for their children. During each exchange, I found myself
thinking about what I would share in this week's newsletter to help you. After all, all of us, regardless of where we
live in the world, are being affected by these challenging times. So, in keeping with my reputation for writing
from my own life experience, here's what I'm doing:
-
Put
limits on sensational, bad news.
Remember that the media has an extremely short amount of time to
get your attention, and an equal amount of short time to provide you with
information. Fear grabs people quicker
than good news. And, in addition to fear-based headlines that pull you in looking for help, it's important to remember that there's
no way for you to get valuable advice in three to five minutes from a TV
reporter. If you're worried about
your retirement savings or your kid's college fund, for example, please do
more in depth research. Check out
sites like http://www.fool.com or
http://finance.yahoo.com/ to learn
more about your particular situation and the best approach to take at this
time.
- Put
limits on your interactions with pesky pessimists. Not only is it important to limit
negative and sensational news, it's just as important to limit your time
spent with those who feed on drama, negativity and fear. Right now you need to surround yourself
with people who are levelheaded, hopeful, and experienced in handling life
challenges in a way that feels right to you. That's not to say that you
can't be there for friends and family who need to talk about their
concerns (or to share your own). You
just need to make sure these conversations are constructive, not
destructive, and that the negative ones don't consume your precious time
and energy.
-
Fill
your head and heart with empowering information and inspiration. As much time as you spend sharing your
fear and worries with safe people, spend even more time looking for what's
working in life. Are your loved
ones healthy? Is your son or daughter happy in school? Does your cat or dog continue to provide
you with endless love and laughter?
Are you fortunate enough to have a job you enjoy? What you focus on expands so please put your
energy into seeing a bright and prosperous future for us all by focusing
on the goodness that exists all around you. To help, check out http://darynkagan.com/ for
great inspirational and empowering stories from around the world.

Become
a source of hope and strength for others. I've found that over the last week, the
one thing that consistently keeps me feeling hopeful and filled with faith
is taking the time to remind others of their ability to weather this very
difficult storm. By speaking
empowering words, you not only bring hope to others, you bring hope to
yourself as well. Remind your family
members of what really matters: Them! Tell a co-worker that you believe he has
what it takes to recover from this financial setback once the dust
settles. Tell your children that
the test of a person's character is in how they handle life's challenges
and then go about the business of making them proud. Show the world your good side :).
Finally,
those of us who are committed to becoming more conscious and caring people have
an obligation to use our spiritual skill to hold a positive vision of the
future for those who can't right now. If you believe in the
power of thought to transform our physical world - and I do - then now's the
time to use it. Here's an idea:
Every single time you see or hear about the Dow
Jones average, envision the numbers going up, up, up. Rather than seeing this instrument as a
financial barometer, see it as a spiritual tool you can use to imagine a prosperous world for everyone. When the numbers go down, and they will off and on, keep raising them up in your mind. Believe it or not, it only takes a small
percentage of people to make it happen. Will
you be one of them?
p.s. - Why not forward this newsletter to family and friends and ask them to do the same. Let's use our collective power to turn this setback into a steppingstone toward an even better world!
