I am but too conscious of the fact that we are born in an age when only the dull are treated seriously, and I live in terror of not being misunderstood. ~ Oscar Wilde

For the Funnybone
Have you ever tried to throttle a laugh? This is a classic scene from the Carol Burnett show with Dick Van Dyke, where Tim Conway tells his elephant story, and won't stop - while the rest of the cast tries to stay in character. The end is priceless!

A Walk Down Memory Lane with Paul McCartney
I just stumbled across this very sweet video of Paul McCartney singing "For No One," apparently introducing it to his fellow Beatles and George Martin. Check out his roughing out the French horn parts.

Beyond Violence to Empathy with Jeremy Rifkin
One of the clearest voices pointing to our need to shift from our current stance of polarization to become "Homo empathicus" is Jeremy Rifkin: here is a great animation presenting his ideas.

Dear Friends,
I know that for me, 2010 is proving to be one of the busiest years ever, with the economic crisis demanding enormous amounts of time and energy for me, as I am sure it is demanding of you as well. For that reason, I've decided to send out one newsletter per quarter instead of on a monthly basis. I hope you enjoy Healing Times eNewsletter, and that you will recommend it to your friends. Funds for its production and distribution come from your purchases of the products displayed here and on my website. More support = more frequent publication.
These are times of enormous change and great suffering; oil spills, joblessness, unusual weather patterns, and political polarization are signs that we need to heed. More than ever it's important for us to take care of ourselves, and our families and our communities.
In this issue we will focus on some of the unique challenges of our age of paradox, as the Dalai Lama calls it. Because we cannot heal ourselves or our world unless we see clearly what is out of balance, I present "A Decade of Decay," as I think it helps to clarify what we are really dealing with. On the positive side, I still believe we can turn things around if we realize our personal and collective power.
"Green Exercise" is an easy way to keep our wits in the middle of the gathering storm - try it, you'll like it. It is important to enjoy the summertime when the living is (relatively) easy, yet it is crucial that we begin to save up our energy for when the fierce winds begin to blow.
My life's goal has been to create tools, such as the CDs offered in this newsletter, that can enable the mind and spirit to heal the body, create positive behavior change and empower personal transformation - at a minimum of cost.
Studies have shown that for nearly every human affliction, to reduce stress and create emotional and behavioral balance is the single most important intervention - just as I described in my early writings. To my mind, there is no more effective or inexpensive way to deal with life's challenges and illnesses than the wisdom and skills offered by the products offered on this page.
Letting Go of Stress continues to be the sine qua non for dealing with the inner conflicts and tension life throws our way. And in a year so filled with unknowns and insecurity, Abolish Anxiety and Down With High Blood Pressure will prove invaluable. Easing Into Sleep is another critical addition to your mental medicine cabinet.
If life's stressors have already taken some toll, Escape From Depression will provide tools that have been lifesaving for many. The Serenity Prayer is excellent for maintaining balance in the face of the difficult decisions that lie before us, and Accepting Change and Moving On provides a way to release what we need to let go of.
And, of course, if you haven't told all your friends about Our Culture On The Couch, Seven Steps to Global Healing, now is a good time to do it. Have a great summer...
Warmly, Emmett Miller, MD |

· Green Exercise Heals the MindExercising, even for just five minutes,
in a "green space," such as a park or trail, can boost your mental

They looked at evidence from 1,250 people

after just minutes of such activities as walking, gardening, cycling,
fishing, boating, horse riding and farming. In each study, mood and
self-esteem were measured using two widely accepted assessment scales.
All types of green exercise led to improvements in mental health
indicators.
