green em1 Dear Friends,

As I put the final touches on this week's newsletter I am reflecting on an article in the Smithsonian exploring the similarities between Darwin and Lincoln, who were born on the same day. The election and inauguration of President Obama has focused attention on Lincoln's remarkable accomplishments.

As this issue will touch on the economic issues we are all confronting, I am reminded of one of his quotes:

"As a result of the war, corporations have been enthroned and an era of corruption in high places will follow, and the money power of the country will endeavor to prolong its reign by working upon the prejudices of the people until all wealth is aggregated in a few hands and the Republic is destroyed. I feel at this moment more anxiety for the safety of my country than ever before, even in the midst of war. God grant that my suspicions may prove groundless.*"

We have quite a challenge these days - to keep stress at a level that it supports our creativity and performance rather than creating illness - and at the same time to not do this by putting our heads in the sand. I hope the article below provides you with some tools for accomplishing this.
If you feel this newsletter has value, please share it with others. It is an enormously expensive undertaking, and in order to continue its publication we need to expand the readership. There is no other marketing or promotion other than word of mouth. That is, we are depending on you! Click Here to forward this email to your friends and contacts!!!

And for those who want to spend a day with me in the SF Bay Area, I am presenting Awakening the Healer Within Workshop, sponsored by Healing Journeys on April 4 at the Marriot in San Mateo. Click Here to find out MORE!

Lastly, I wanted to make sure you all knew that we are now offering Letting Go Of Stress as an MP3!  Now, get my #1 selling product INSTANTLY as a download. Click Here to order now.

domino Economic Stress
                         By Emmett Miller MD

As the news presents us on a daily
basis with more and more evidence
that the world as we have known it is
no more. Global economic turmoil is
becoming more and more local. In the
new world, our ability to survive and
thrive, individually and as a country
(even a planet) will rest upon our ability
       to successfully manage stress. This
means treating more than the symptoms
of stress - we need to treat the source.

Crucial to managing stress is to understand what stress is. Stress,
according to the definition given it by Han Selye, is "the non-specific reaction to a perceived demand." Consider the following example:

Perceived Demand

Tom has lost his job and has barely enough money to meet his mortgage payments or the rent on his kids' apartment at school, for more than two more months. After that he will be in big trouble - he's already been late on a couple of payments and his credit score is low.

The good news is that Tom has an interview with a very active and growing company, one he'd love to work for, It's a company that's part of the new economy, creating green products that use energy efficiently.

And the bad news is that it's been quite a while since Tom has reviewed the material he studied back in school, so he'll have to do a fair amount of reading before the interview. This is one demand on him. Tom is also worried that the recommendation letter from his previous boss may not be strongly worded enough to inspire confidence in his prospective employer. He is worried that he will become nervous and tense as he often does in interviews. This is another demand (stressor). He also worries that if he doesn't get the job that his family may lose their home - another demand.

Just thinking about it causes Tom's heart to beat faster; he begins to perspire, his muscles tense, his mind races and he feels fear. Tom's body is showing the symptoms - symptoms that his nervous system perceives there to be a significant demand. Tom has three worries, but they require different responses, if he is to be successful in resolving them.

His need to appear knowledgeable is a demand that can be responded to by his reviewing and studying before going to the interview. This is Type 1 Stress. Its source is clear, it is of limited duration, and the response to it is clear. The specific response to this demand is to study the required work and then show up for the interview and do his best.

His worry about the quality of the recommendation letter is a very different kind of demand. The source of the stress is known, but there is no action Tom can take to lessen it. He cannot change history or the letter that it gave rise to. In this case, the appropriate response is accommodation; acceptance that the letter is what it is - with serenity.

Instead, Tom feels uptight - he worries and cannot sleep. His problem here is his imagination. Although he knows nothing can be done about the letter, he keeps wishing he had done things differently at the previous job and gotten a better letter. The stress he is feeling is the result of the mental tension caused by holding these two contradictory thoughts in his mind. His unconscious mind mistakenly thinks that creating this cognitive dissonance will make things better.

Instead, Tom feels anxious, tense, starts smoking more often, has fits of anger, and is often irritable. Headaches, stomachaches, and other physical symptoms appear.

How much better for him if Tom accepts the world as it is and finds a way to use his gifts, talents and powers within the framework of reality.

Likewise, his angst concerning the challenges his family may be facing in the future is the direct result of his mental image of a possible negative future event. His unconscious thinks replaying that scene will help him better deal with it. Instead, the more he worries, the more anxiety he will feel, and the poorer he will perform in his interview. This is how Old Paradigm thinking creates a self-fulfilling prophecy. The proper way to manage this stressor would be to replace the negative with a positive future outcome.

Nonspecific Responses

Any response that does not function to relieve the demand is a nonspecific response. Tom's non-specific responses are anxiety and fear, the tension, headaches, diarrhea, and his inability to perform at his best at the interview. These are not behaviors that help Tom accomplish his goal. Not only will they make Tom unhappy and sick, but also they may lose him the job.

Although ostensibly this story is about Tom, it is actually a metaphor for what we are all dealing with - the stress of an uncertain and menacing economic future.

Stress is the mind and body freaking out the way nature intended them to do when your life is in immediate danger. The alarms going off in your Central Nervous System are causing Adrenaline and Cortisol to be pumped into your circulatory system. These speed up physical processes, taking energy away from creative mental processes and diverting it to produce tension, anxiety, and physical symptoms and escape behaviors (addictions).

Self-Assessment

How has the recent thrashing about of the economic environment been affecting you? What symptoms do you notice in response to the energy that has been expended in your attempts to deal with the extremely unpredictable and threatening news that now occupies so much of your thinking? What emotional imbalances do you see, and which of your healthy habits of diet, exercise, and rest have fallen by the wayside? Have you turned to cigarettes, alcohol, or food?

The key, for Tom, and for you, is to find that eternally peaceful place that is at our quiet center, and to return to it often. This way you keep reminding your physical body that the responses that are needed to deal with the current situation are creative mental responses, not defensive physical ones, or intense emotional responses.

This key releases you from maladaptive distracting behaviors, and opens the door to the awareness of your deeper self, and awareness of your deeper values, and your commitment to certain principles, your personal responsibility. From this flows clarity, for you are unwilling to continue to delude yourself with fairy tales, and instead using your mind appropriately, you can access your inner wisdom - the way to make correct choices. After all, you are not really powerless, no matter what negative thinking will try to convince you.

You Are Not Powerless

On the contrary, you have the opportunity to choose how you will address the next decision you are faced with. You have the opportunity to confront the future using either the paradigm of creativity or that of defensiveness. You can choose from the deeper, wise part of yourself, or you can fail to choose wisely, and instead allow impulsive, panicked decisions.

Easier to say than to do? Yes, but so is learning to fly a plane or use the Internet. Fortunately, the crucial skills we are talking about here are ones you can learn. It takes practice, as any learning does -exposing yourself to certain very basic truths on a very regular basis. Most efficient for this purpose is the use of deep states of relaxation and meditation; they open your mind to change, and give you access to your deeper Self. Then, during these psychically vulnerable moments, expose your mind to the teachings of wisdom, to the kinds of thoughts and imagery that have the power to engage your nervous system in responding appropriately to stressors. As the brain entrains with these images the chemistry of the brain changes. In effect you activate the internal pharmacy in your mind, and set your system on a healing course.

Next Steps

·Cognitive Apprehension: Understand what in this article is really of value to you, and learn it well. (Intellectual, Cognitive)

·Deep Relaxation:
Develop the ability to quickly enter the present moment - to embody the knowledge that at this moment there is no other place you need to go, nothing you need to do, and no problem you need to solve.

·Wisdom: Find wise teachings for confronting demands, and expose your deeper mind to them.

Awakening the Healer Within

We have become more aware of the vast resources within each individual that may work for or against healing or the achievement of wholeness. In this workshop, Dr. Miller will explore the principles of self-healing, current findings in psychoneuroimmunology (the effect of thoughts on the immune system), and the process through which thoughts and images become biochemistry.  This workshop is an experiential introduction to both the why and the how of tapping your inner resources for awakening, promoting and supporting the healing process.

Where Did White Man Go Wrong?

The old Indian Chief "Two Eagles" was interviewed by a U.S. Government official, "You have observed the white man for 90 years. You've seen his wars and his technological advances. You've seen his progress, and the damage he's done."

The Chief nodded vigorously in agreement.

The official continued, "Considering all these events, in your opinion, where did the white man go wrong?"

The Chief stared at the government official for over a minute and then calmly replied:

"When white man find land, Indians running it. No taxes. No debt. Plenty Buffalo. Plenty Beaver. Clean Water. Medicine free. Women play with children all day. Indian man spend all day hunting and fishing - all night having sex."

Then the chief leaned back and smiled. "Only white man dumb enough to think he could improve system like that!"

"Lenin was certainly right, there is no positive, or subtle or surer means of destroying the existing basis of society than to debauch the currency. Through a continuing process of inflation, governments can confiscate, secretly and unobserved, an important part of the wealth of the citizens. The process engages all of the hidden forces of economics on the side of destruction, and does it in a manner that not one man in a million can diagnose."

~John Maynard Keynes,
the father of modern economic theory.
