Dear friends,
As I put the finishing touches on my article for this special edition of Healing Times, I am looking out at a beautiful scene of fresh white snow, and enjoying the love of my family.
With
our electrical power out, we will eat dinner to the flicker of
candlelight, and enjoy the gift of each other - laughing, playing,
loving, and teasing - instead of checking our email and updating our
Facebook profiles. So, if my Valentine is a little late in reaching you, rest assured that it was not late in its inception - blame it on the power lines.
Today our focus will be on Love, at the personal level and at the collective level, for personal love is concentrated universal love. Many of the ideas presented here are explored more fully in my new book, Our Culture On The Couch due to be available by the end of this month.
So, be well, and remember, those who love deeply never grow old; they may die of old age, but they die young.
In love and peace,
Emmett Miller MD

A Global Valentine's Day Wish
Valentine's Day is upon us - that annual "Hallmark holiday" when hearts and flowers abound - and woe be unto the swain who forgets to get a Valentine's Day present or at least a card or box of candy for his sweetie. In exploring the roots of this holiday, however, we find more violence than sentimental silliness.
St. Valentine is believed to have been a Christian priest in Rome, back in the second century A.D., when Rome was at war. It seems the emperor Claudius felt that soldiers who were not married were better fighters.
The priests were ordered, therefore, not to perform marriages on soldiers in the Roman legions. In the most popular version of the story, St. Valentine, because of the sacred esteem in which he held human love, especially between a man and a woman, felt it would be wrong to deny them this sacrament. When he felt marriages were appropriate, he secretly joined couples in holy matrimony, and in other ways helped Christians. He was rewarded by being tortured and executed.
This little history is interesting in many respects, especially when one considers the global situation we face. It seems the human race has some sort of suicidal urge that causes us to break into warring camps, rather than to join our gifts and talents to support what we hold in common.
I think our legendary St. Valentine faced a fundamental existential challenge. If we think of war as a kind of ultimate model of violence, and if we see the extraordinary connection that takes place in the hearts, minds and souls of a love-struck couple as a model of pure love, then what St. Valentine faced was basically a conflict between behaving in a way that supported pure love, or in a way that supported ultimate Violence. (If he denied marriage to a couple in love, he was supporting Claudius' violence.)
Embracing a New Paradigm In my book, Culture on the Couch: Seven Steps to Global Healing, I assert that a major factor in the formation of the deeply flawed world we now confront has been dependence on an Old Paradigm of Violence. What the world needs now is a New Paradigm of Love.
In my analysis, the diseases and illnesses we endure derive primarily from the use of the Old Paradigm - which focuses on differences among people rather than similarities. The Old Paradigm perspective is of black and white, good and evil, us and them.
Our Culture of Violence We see the Old Paradigm of violence (both emotional and physical) in action every day. We see it in on the news, at work, and even in those brief moments when we say or do unkind things to friends, family, coworkers and total strangers.
We also see it in the institutionalized violence of our society. Yes, we have an African-American president, but a huge segment of the African-American community still remains "unemancipated" from the prejudice, poverty and lack of opportunity created by centuries of Old Paradigm thinking. And we see it in the pathetic living conditions of the Native Americans that have survived the genocide that marked our country' s birth, and in the abuse of women, elders, children, and nearly every minority.
We see Old Paradigm thinking wreak havoc all the way up to the level of wars between nations and ideologies driven by the belief that their differences - rather than their common best interests - are so important that they send their sons and daughters to kill and be killed rather than consider the loving wisdom of the New Paradigm of love and acceptance.
Room for Both Despite the atrocities committed under the aegis of the Old Paradigm, there is no need to entirely eliminate the Old Paradigm; when used appropriately, it can serve a useful purpose. Instead, the goal is to incorporate the New Paradigm into our way of thinking without abandoning the useful (and often necessary) aspects of the Old Paradigm.
Naturally, the Either-Or mindset sees a conflict between the two paradigms, imagining the two are somehow in opposition. In fact, what we have is a systemic type of relationship, one in which the Old Paradigm is simply a part, a special case, of the New Paradigm - just as Newtonian physics is part of Einsteinian quantum mechanics.
Literally, you can't have one without the other. So, the idea is not so much to replace our usual way of thinking, as it is to expand it - to broaden our options and horizons.
The key to our survival is to become proficient in using both paradigms. We must be capable of differentiation, anger, self-defense, and sometimes even aggression - but we also must know how and when to use the Both-And approach. The Serenity Prayer provides perhaps the simplest and wisest guidance for choosing:
God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, Courage to change the things I can, And wisdom to know the difference.
Which brings us back to Valentine's Day We can respond to this holiday using the Old Paradigm by ignoring it because it is a blatant commercial exploitation of a sacred holiday for lovers - or we can follow the rules and avoid domestic discord.
Of course, many people will have a wonderful Valentine's Day spending money and mindlessly engaging in traditional romantic rituals. More power to them.
However, for those of us wishing to transcend the Old Paradigm - without giving it up - we can honor St. Valentine's sacrifice by celebrating the deeper meanings of Love.
The New Paradigm of wholeness allows you to celebrate - or not celebrate - Valentine's Day the way that is most meaningful to you and your partner. Honor the old traditions or ignore them. Start new traditions uniquely you. Express your love - to those that will be nurtured by it.
Suggested Meditation for the Day Valentine's Day gives us an opportunity to go through the basic steps of healing. Take a moment and become present. Be aware.
Be aware of who you really are. Tap into your inner wisdom.
Decide if you should just accommodate the status quo or whether you should actually use the martyrdom of St. Valentine as an inspiration for growth in a positive direction, in the direction of love.
You might, for example imagine a group of Roman soldiers coming back from a battle, scarred and freshly wounded, with blood and death on their swords. Having suffered and served their duty, imagine the reunions of these warriors had when they returned to the arms of the women who had feared them dead.
It doesn't matter whether or not these couples were consecrated in marriage by St. Valentine. The point here is that we honor St. Valentine, because he honored the essence of love although it led to his death.
And as you attune to the spirit that produced St. Valentine's willingness to die for love - you might honor, as well, those others who have done the same, including Gandhi, King, Moses, Jesus and others who faced virtual certain death acting on their beliefs. Take this opportunity to celebrate the power and beauty of Love and Truth.

Doctors in Heaven
Two doctors and an HMO manager died and lined up at the pearly gates for admission to heaven. St. Peter asked them to identify themselves.
One doctor stepped forward and said: "I was a pediatric spine surgeon and helped kids overcome their deformities." St. Peter said, "You can enter." The second doctor said: "I was a holistic family physician, and through my loving guidance many lives were guided to health and wellness.? was a psychiatrist. I helped people rehabilitate themselves." St. Peter also invited him in. The third applicant stepped forward and said: "I was an HMO manager. I helped people get cost-effective health care." St. Peter said, "You can come in too." But as the HMO manager walked by, St. Peter added, "You can stay three days. After that you can go to hell."
