Greetings!

Inauguration Day is anything but a national holiday - yet perhaps this year it should be.

Certainly, there are many who fear the inauguration of Barack Obama and his new administration will lead to nothing significantly different from years past. These naysayers claim we have been sold a line. They say we have been conned into believing we have someone here who is truly going to give us real change this time. Cynically, they point out how many times in the past we thought things would be different this time - and how every time we've been bitterly disappointed. ("Fool me once . . .")

Oh, yes, there were the George Washingtons and the Abraham Lincolns - leaders who delivered real and positive change. But do we dare to believe that not all our great leaders are behind us. Do we dare to hope?

To inaugurate means to initiate a certain plan or course of action, usually done with a certain formal and solemn ceremonies. When the bride and groom say, "I do," they have inaugurated a new condition or system. Certain behaviors that might have been permissible, or excusable before, are no longer so - and by the same token, they are agreeing to new responsibilities. Perhaps, on January 20, we should inaugurate more than a new president.

Up until now far too many of our citizens have abdicated our civic responsibilities. We watched - some with blind patriotic faith, others with blind defeatist apathy - while those we entrusted with our futures and those of our children ran amok, driving our economy into the ground and destroying our reputation around the world.
Now, if we revert to our default behavior and sit back to "see if Mr. Obama can get us out of this mess," we are likely to prove the cynics right. Yet the obvious truth is that Mr. Obama cannot save us - without our active participation.

President Obama said as much in his midnight acceptance speech Nov. 4. In no uncertain terms, he stressed, "This is your victory." This means we must ask ourselves, " How can I play my part, and help in the enormous task of healing that is facing us all?"
Of course, there will be people who will choose to remain paralyzed by the fear that Obama will only bring more of the same. And there will be other people who will wait in craven anticipation of Obama's first mistake. But every president makes mistakes; none ever lives up to their own billing.

Today, Jan. 20, there will be many do-nothing-and-expect-the-worst people ready to hold us back because they don't believe change is possible. The question is: Will you - or I - be one of them?
By all accounts, this is a defining moment in history - and it is up to us to define it.

For all the naysayers and doom-mongers, there are many more people believe the Jan. 20 inauguration of President Obama is, in a greater sense, the inauguration of a new way of thinking. They suspect - and hope - that Mr. Obama does not think in the old paradigm, that he has made the shift to thinking about things in a new way. They choose to believe that he is not focused on differences and conflict, but on the ways and means of collaboration. Let us hope they are right.

There are those who think Mr. Obama is making a big mistake by choosing certain Republicans from old administrations for cabinet or other important posts. But others believe, just as firmly, that what he's doing is forging a coalition - a true team of rivals - each of whom will strive to best the other, yet not allow personal rivalry to interfere with their mutual commitment to support truth, justice and the American way.

Those standing back with their hands in their (empty) pockets and a "wait-and-see" look on their faces merely reflect the old paradigm way of thinking - but they do so at their own risk. Indeed, it is becoming more and more apparent that unless we learn to hang together, we will definitely hang separately - and it won't be fun.
So, at this defining moment in history, we have the opportunity to inaugurate not just a president and the administration he (and his party) selects, we can inaugurate a new world view - one that looks at the future in a way that is sustainable, that overcomes the petty jealousies, conflicts, arguments of the past, and truly serves - and respects - the greater good of us all.

So, here's the question:

What is it time for you be inaugurating in your life?If it is true that each of us truly has a part to play in evolving our collective future, what's the right role for you to play? In what way will you play more of a leadership role in your relationship to yourself? What behaviors will you let go of, which will you nurture, and what new behaviors (mental, physical, emotional, behavioral) do you intent to manifest in yourself in the next few years?

In what ways have you been misled in the past, and where can you find the wisdom to lead yourself more wisely in the future? In what way can you divert some of your life's energy so as to focus on something more important than yourself? Can you think of a new way you would like our country to be led?

How can you participate in a distributed leadership model in your work, your family or your personal community? In what way do you feel called to serve?

"This is your victory." That means the responsibility is on you and me. We should expect no more of him that we expect of ourselves.
Barack Obama is offering us a new leadership paradigm. From now on, leadership needs to come from the ground up. We must learn to lead from within.
