Got Economic Stress?

ECONOMIC CRISIS!!

Now that I've got your attention . . . lets take a look at the extraordinary opportunity that lies before us to apply the principles and use the tools of Software for the Mind.

Suddenly it's not so important whether the color of your iPod carrying case matches your gym shoes. Something much more important is going on.

It would be rare to find someone who was feeling no stress as a result of the recent global economic downturn. If you have not been living in a cave the last few months, you may well be experiencing symptoms that are:
·    Emotional (fear, anger, despair),
·    Physical (headache, IBS, muscle tension),
·    Behavioral (smoking, alcohol, overeating, withdrawal),
·    Mental (confusion, worry, poor concentration),
·    Social (friction, isolation, squabbles).

Begin by using your conscious intellect, and understand that stress is stress - regardless of whether it is triggered by an economic crisis, a saber-tooth tiger or a new baby. By definition, stress is the non-specific alarm reaction that occurs when your nervous system believes that a demand is being made on you, that there is something you must immediately respond to. You may well have found your attention enormously monopolized by the events in the external world lately, and these symptoms may be the crucial message that you need to hear.

In the case of a saber-tooth tiger, this is a good thing - the anxiety produces the chemicals that can send our body into rapid flight, or into a fight mode. Our problems arise when we are confronted with at social stressor - when there are social a new baby or an economic crisis, for instance. In such cases, the positive role played by the alarm reaction is finished when it has awakened us to the fact that it may be time to make certain choices or decisions in our lives. It focuses our attention.

But, once your attention is focused on the issue at hand, the nonspecific tension, racing thoughts, and tiresome emotions stress generates are of no value to you. What's more, it can cause damage. Whether the stress you are feeling contributes to your creativity, paralyzes you in fear, or causes poorly thought out responses, depends upon how you handle it. And the fate of our world hangs in the balance.

The Wise Choice

Wisdom tells us that the first thing we need to do in responding to an alarm is turn off the alarm, so that it stops distracting you from the things you really need to be doing. This is a perfect time to take advantage of the skills you have developed in meditation, imagery, prayer or yoga, relax your body, and clear your mind. (If you have not yet learned these skills, there is no better time than now to begin. It could save your life. Letting Go of Stress is a good place to start.

Now might be a perfect time to reconnect with your spiritual path, and with those whose words and guidance you follow. Perhaps all you really need is the faith of a mustard seed, or the awareness of Buddha's message - that the cause of all suffering (including the kind that is the result of economic stress) is wanting things to be different from what they are. They cannot. Everything that is happening is exactly what we should expect from a world behaving as we have in the past. Denial will not help, and when you accept what you cannot change you can let go of the stress. You can relax.

Whether your denial takes the form of frustration, anger, fear, guilt, or despair, it is essential to relieve the stress so you can see the big picture and make wise choices. Once you have stopped and come into the present moment through deep relaxation, you can now use your skills of guided imagery. Redirect your mental images away from scary future scenarios towards positive outcomes, so as to enable you to benefit from the so-called "Law of Attraction."

Centering
Direct your awareness first towards those images that restore balance and connect you with your center, your deeper Self. Gratitude is a good place to stare. Focus on the fact that:
·    You are alive
·    You were not born a banana slug or a tick
·    You have sight and hearing and can walk
·    You are actually able to read and understand these words
·    You are not a slave, and can vote and have a say in your life
·    You have love in your life
·    You live in a country where you are free

Make your own list, noting the thoughts and images that are most effective at evoking the emotion of gratitude. This connects you with your deeper, more eternal Self, and guides you away from the thousands of voices that are trying to get you to feel fear. Connect with who and what you love deeply and are loved by.

Empowerment
Next, selecting those reference images that evoke the kinesthetic sense of empowerment, you begin to produce the best internal neuro-chemical environment for making wise decisions. Relax, close your eyes, and let yourself drift back and look back some of those situations in the past where you were able to accept the inevitable with serenity, where you were able to confront a challenge with the courage to make the changes that needed to be made. Recall how seeming obstacles can be turned into challenges, opportunities for honing your skills and winning meaningful victories.

Once you can sense this inner power, reflect upon the tools available to you - your personal gifts, talents, abilities, privilege, wealth or the social support system available to you. Sense your willingness to do your part in this enormous global restructuring that is about to take place. Remember, you are not alone - and give yourself permission to be patient.

Feedforward
Now look at the world around you, still from this place of wisdom. Be aware that the answers we need are lying in full view all around us, but we must be alert, with our vision freed from the distorting influence of stress. Avoiding hasty decisions, choose, intentionally, to allow yourself to slowly and carefully consider the possible pathways towards the future you want to create - taking as many days or weeks as you need, and using the best resources at your disposal.

Make a commitment to regularly relax or use other ways to empty yourself of the friction that would otherwise build up as you consider these important matters. Put the times on your calendar.

If you are one of those who is not experiencing economic stress at this time, then this is an opportunity for you to develop your skills of empathy, compassion and generosity.  And since what will be the most important election of your life is here, remember to vote early!
