Col. Timothy Dodge Updates our MAC Members at the November Military Affairs Committee Luncheon

Col Timothy Dodge

Col. Timothy Dodge speaks at November MAC Luncheon

On Friday, November 18th, Col. Timothy Dodge, 90th Mission Support Group Commander, spoke to the Greater Cheyenne Chamber of Commerce Military Affairs Committee about the economic impact that F.E. Warren Air Force Base has on both Cheyenne and the state of Wyoming. Overall, the base contributes approximately $364 million of economic growth to our local economy. This does not include retired military pay which adds another $61 million to that. There are over 7000 active military and dependents living in Cheyenne. Only a couple 100 of those live on base with the rest of them finding their housing off base. There are over 650 civilian jobs on the base and over 800 civilian jobs when you include the ones off base. Overall, over 8500 people in Cheyenne have a job because of F.E. Warren. The annual payroll alone is $221 million and their total annual expenditures are around $79 million. Cheyenne provides $10 million in healthcare to its thousands of military residents and the base provides $2.5 million in tuition assistance to both military and their spouses. This ensures that the base has a healthy and well educated workforce to provide this country with the best air force in the world. The air force has calculated that they indirectly create 1500 jobs which is the equivalent of another $64 million. They also currently have $5.5 million in ongoing construction on the base. This includes $1.8 million in new construction on the dog kennels, renovation of a 40 year vacant building for the base museum, renovation of a 20 year vacant building for a new Missile engineer squadron, a new wind turbine, as well as over 700 homes that are either being built or remodeled.

Over the last couple of years, the Chamber's Military Affairs Committee has been refocusing its efforts to include less troop support and more advocacy in an effort to make sure that Cheyenne does not lose its base. It is very important that we have a strong military presence in the world as well as in our country but when you actually look at the numbers and see that our base contributes over $364 million to our local economy each year, you can begin to understand what that means to our local business economy and how important it is for our community to keep it here.
