Major General Luke Reiner Speaks about the Economic Impact of the Military in Wyoming

Wyoming's Adjutant General, Major General Luke Reiner, Speaks at MAC Luncheon
On October 21st at Trail's End, Wyoming's Adjutant General, Major General Luke Reiner, spoke to the Greater Cheyenne Chamber of Commerce's Military Affairs Committee about the Economic Impact of the military to both the State of Wyoming as well as the City of Cheyenne. Over the last two years, the total impact of the Wyoming Military Department, including the Air Guard, Army Guard, Joint Forces, and State Employees, has been over $240 million. Approximately 92% of that has come from the federal government. $55 million goes through their state budget each year and only about $18 million of that comes from our state government. Much of that cost goes towards the military employees who are paid by the state but Wyoming is reimbursed by the federal government for that expense. Laramie County is the largest recipient of those funds with one-third, or a little more than 1,120 out of over 3,300, of all state military employees located here. The Wyoming National Guard employs approximately 600 guardsmen from other states but most of the guard's employees are from right here in their home state.
Capital construction is also a major component of the military's financial contribution. In Cheyenne alone, they have committed $40 million to an aviation support facility at FE Warren Air Force Base as well as another $40 million for their new Joint Force Headquarters. The military also just received word that they would build a $9 million readiness center next to the aviation support center. About one month ago in Laramie, they broke ground on a $15 million maintenance shop and they are working with the legislature on an armory to go with it which is in the defense plan for fiscal year 17. In Guernsey, they will break ground next month on a $4.2 million US Air Force building and have recently completed several ranges totaling about $7 million. Also in the defense plan for fiscal year 17, is a new $31 million armory in Guernsey that will replace their old one which will be given to the US Air Force.
Over the last 7 years, there has been a 1000% increase in the use of Camp Guernsey and the National Guard recently identified it as one of the 11 regional collective training centers for the entire nation. This is extremely important for us since many of the training centers around the nation are currently being consolidated.
As a state, Wyoming has put quite a bit of money, land, and effort into Camp Guernsey and the rest of our military forces which is very important to keeping it here. Cheyenne has, for the most part, been much more economically stable than the rest of the nation. The military is an integral part of that and it is vitally important that the citizens of both Cheyenne and Wyoming make an effort to continually support both the troops as well as the mission here.

Leadership Cheyenne's "Bootification" Ball 2011
| | |
From a bar of soap to a mangled man that got in a motorcycle wreck, all types of costumes were seen at the 2011 Boo Ball on Saturday, October 22nd at the Holiday Inn. This annual fundraiser benefits the "Beautifying the Community of Cheyenne" project. The Greater Cheyenne Chamber of Commerce Leadership Class of 2011 presented the dinner, costume party/contest and silent auction. This year, the class will use the proceeds on the restoration of the historic Art Deco Fountain by the airport.
The evening started with "costume watching" and cocktails. After checking out the costume competition, we enjoyed dinner, catered by the Holiday Inn, while being entertained by the Cheyenne Little Theatre's performance of Time Warp from the Rocky Horror Picture Show. During this time, the silent auction was taking place and the costume contest was prepping to begin.
Yours truly was lucky enough to be a judge this year for the costume contest. Talk about pressure! I have never seen so many amazing costumes in my life. How was I ever going to help pick the top three in each category? The categories were as follows with the winner in parentheses: Best Female (man dressed as a ballerina), Best Male (blue martian), Best Couple (white zombie southerners), Best Group (Alice in Wonderland characters), Scariest (man who got in a motorcycle accident) and the Most Original (bar of soap and a loofa). I can assure you, the winners of each category did not disappoint.
Then, the amazing Boogie Machine Band hit the stage sporting humongous afros. As always, they put on an electrifying performance, playing the likes of "Super Freak", "We are Family", "Kung Fu Fighting", "Play That Funky Music" and many other classic tunes. Everyone danced the night away!
All in all, the Boo Ball was a great event this year. Thank you to all of the sponsors who made the event happen. If you weren't able to make it this year, you won't want to miss it next year, as it is sure to be another mind-blowing event!
