Experts discuss ways to save money on home heating at free workshop Friday October 21st at Little America Hotel in Cheyenne (Teton Room)
AARP Wyoming, Cheyenne Light, Fuel & Power and Habitat for Humanity host 3rd annual Operation Energy Save workshop and fair at Little America from 1-5 pm Oct. 21
CHEYENNE - The recent snowstorm forced many people in the Cheyenne area to turn on their heat for the first time this heating season, and for some it is a cause for concern.
"The economy has taken a toll on people's savings and a lot of people are worried about the cost of heating their homes this winter," AARP Wyoming Director Tim Summers said. "That's why we've gathered a group of experts to help people understand what they can do about their home heating bills."
The third annual Operation Energy Save workshop and fair will be held from 1-5 pm Friday, Oct. 21 at Little America in Cheyenne. The workshop and fair is free and open to the public.
"Whether you want to make your home more energy efficient, or if you think you may need to apply for assistance to pay your bills, there will be experts available to answer your questions," Summers said. "There will be something at the workshop for everyone - home owners, renters and small business owners."
Wyoming Public Service Commissioner Cindy Lewis will discuss what is predicted for heating costs this winter, and will explain what steps you need to take if you think you may be in danger of having your home heat shut off. Brenda Ilg from the Wyoming Department of Family Services will provide information about assistance programs that pay a portion of heat and telephone bills directly for those who qualify and a program that will make your home more energy efficient. AARP Wyoming president Cathy Gonzales will explain how to use free home safety and energy efficiency checklists to assess your home.
Shannon Stanfill from the State Energy Office will discuss incentives and rebates available to small businesses and homeowners to make energy improvements. Monica Puente from Cheyenne Light, Fuel & Power will talk about which energy improvements are likely to save you the most money. And, Dana Lehman from Habitat for Humanity of Laramie County will explain how you can get low-cost products at the ReStore in Cheyenne, and help a good cause while you're at it.
"It's a busy time of year, and no one likes to think about adding more to their "to do" list," Summers said. "But taking a few steps now can really save you money this winter, and in the future, too."
