Dr. Mark Stock Updates Chamber Members on Academic Performance in Laramie County School District #1 | | |

Dr Mark Stock, Superintendent of Laramie County School District #1 speaks at the October Chamber Monthly Luncheon
Last Friday, at the Holiday Inn, Dr. Mark Stock, Superintendent of Schools for Laramie County School District #1, spoke at the monthly Chamber of Commerce Luncheon and updated us on the recent academic performance of his district. According to Dr. Stock, Wyoming is in the top 5% in the nation for what we spend per child on education and it is his job to be sure that Wyoming children are getting their fair share. At the moment, the school system in Laramie County is in the process of developing their own accountability plan. They are taking a look at the current state of Laramie County schools with regard to status, improvement, and growth. The status of a school district is defined by how that particular school system compares to the rest of the districts in Wyoming as well as how it compares on a national level. A school district's improvement refers to how the testing numbers from this year's group of students in a particular grade level compares to last year's group. These numbers allow the school districts to judge their programs by grade level and evaluate the effectiveness of new programs. Finally, a district's growth refers to individual students. The schools are able to compare the growth of each and every individual student with the growth of other students around the nation who are at the same level in order to judge how much our students are growing intellectually compared with the rest of the country.
The testing in Laramie County School District #1 shows us that our students are performing and growing at a mostly average level with a few above average and a few below average results. A couple of areas stuck out as needing improvement, one of which is the transition from 6th to 7th grade. Our 7th grader's math skills are below average and according to Dr. Stock, this is believed to be due to the difficult transition from 6th to 7th grade.
One other area is the growth of our brightest children. The schools calculate the growth of each and every one of our 13,000 students in Laramie County and then compare that to the rest of the nation. What the numbers from this past year tell us is that our bottom 20% of students are growing much faster than the bottom 20% in the nation. According to Dr. Stock, this is mostly due to the fact that Wyoming has the resources to put into our schools and we have developed many programs to help these particular children succeed. However, as we have done a wonderful job focusing on helping our bottom 20% succeed, the top 20% of our students are not growing as fast as the rest of the nation. This issue is one that they would like to see improvement in for next year. Laramie County School District #1 has many ideas on how this can be accomplished. For parents of gifted children, Dr. Stock suggests going to the principal of your child's school and asking them what else can be done to help your child grow to his or her fullest potential. It is his belief that this will help us to develop more programs in the coming years to ensure that our best students are growing at the same rate or better than the rest of the country. Overall, Laramie County schools are performing very well. This is mostly due to the fact that in Wyoming we are fortunate enough to have the resources to adequately fund our schools. However, there is always room for improvement and Dr. Stock is working closely with the schools in his district to ensure that this happens. He is in the process of meeting with each school to discuss their numbers and ways that they can be improved in future years. Once Dr. Stock has met with all of the schools in the district, he will release the numbers for the individual schools. |

| Congratulations to Cheyenne Teacher and ATHENA Protégé award winner Lisa Esquibel! | | |
Lisa Esquibel, a kindergarten teacher at Davis Elementary School in Cheyenne, WY, will receive the Horace Mann Award for Teaching Excellence, $10,000, and recognition as one of the nation's top five educators at the NEA Foundation's Salute to Excellence in Education Gala to be held on February 10, 2012 in Washington, DC.
Known as the Academy Awards of public education, the gala features award presentations that recognize, reward, and promote excellence in teaching and advocacy for the profession. Of the 35 educators who were nominated by their NEA state affiliates, only five were awarded the Horace Mann Award for Teaching Excellence. One of those five awardees will be the recipient of one of public education's most prestigious honors, The NEA Member Benefits Award for Teaching Excellence, which comes with an additional $25,000 award. This award will be announced at the gala in February.
"Lisa Esquibel has been selected for the award by her peers because she has attained the highest standards of the profession, as shown by her exemplary instruction, advocacy for public education, a commitment to diversity, and engagement of parents and the community," said Harriet Sanford, President and CEO of the NEA Foundation. "Honoring these educators is our way of thanking them for their excellent work."
"We exist as a company to support those who take care of our children's future, and the teachers we're honoring with this award are the best of the best," said Horace Mann President and CEO, Pete Heckman. "We salute them for their commitment and thank them for making a difference every day. Our collective future is brighter because of them."
Esquibel was nominated for the award by the Wyoming Education Association, that state's National Education Association affiliate. Along with her degree in Elementary Education, Lisa has her Master's degree. She is also certified in ESL (English as a Second Language) and middle school education. She is a past president of the Cheyenne Teachers Education Association and a member of the WEA Board of Directors.
"Lisa exemplifies teaching excellence in Wyoming," said WEA President, Kathryn Valido. "She is dedicated to public education and her profession, but most importantly to her students. WEA is delighted that she is being recognized for her accomplishments and dedication." |
