Around Twin Rivers
After just one year within TRUSD, several long-time program improvement schools met federal AYP (Adequate Yearly Progress) criterion for the first time in many years.  If they make AYP this year, they will exit Program Improvement!  Fairbanks Elementary made AYP for the first time in ten years and also had 45 points growth in API (Academic Performance Index)!  North Avenue Elementary also made AYP for the first time in ten years and had 36 points growth in API!  For the first time in six years, Noralto Elementary made AYP and had 55 points growth in API!  Many other TRUSD schools had very impressive gains-all of which will be shared in upcoming reports and presentations for our community.

Congratulations to Rio Linda High School for having their Friday, September 25 Knights vs West Campus Warriors football game selected as the KCRA Game of the Week.  All Rio Linda High School students with a student ID will be given free admission to the game.  The junior varsity team plays at 5:30 pm and varsity game begins at 7:30 pm.

Pioneer Elementary students are fit to run a marathon!  Teacher, Laurie Beyer, is preparing to run in the CIM (California International Marathon) on December 6 and is sharing her fitness enthusiasm with Pioneer's fourth, fifth and sixth graders.  Participating students run daily with each lap counted toward the 26.2 miles.  Kevin Gonzalez, Alexis Kozybovskiy and Anastasiya Nabok from Mrs. Beyer's class; Juan Lopez and Alex Warren from Ms. Cottrell's class and David Gonzalez from Ms. Turney's class are the first

The Grant HS Geo Academy was recently featured in California Country magazine, and hosted a community potluck in their garden with help with business partners United Way and AT&T. Click here to read more about this unique program that grows vegetables and young leaders.
  
Rio Linda High School's Health classes will be hosting guest speakers.  From September 28 to October 1, Denise from WEAVE (Women Escaping a Violent Environment) will talk about unhealthy relationships, dating violence and Megan's law.  On October 5 to 6 and October 15 to 16, Misty Daily from the Sacramento County District Attorney's Office will show students the results of unsafe driving.  Parents and staff are welcome!
 
Best wishes to the students, families and staff of North Avenue Elementary on the grand reopening of their new library which has been closed for ten years.  A ribbon-cutting ceremony will be held on October 7 at 6 pm.
 
Parents, school leaders, community agencies and anyone interested in working to make it safer and more attractive for kids to walk and bike to school and around their neighborhoods are invited to Sacramento's first regional Safe Routes to School Conference
WALKSacramento, a non-profit community organization promoting walkable communities and communities of walkers, and the Sacramento County Department of Transportation are hosting this free conference through a U.S. Department of Transportation Safe Routes to School grant.  Sign up.

Students in foster care will get free dental treatment thanks to a teledentistry project created by the California Dental Association, University of the Pacific Arthur A. Teachers and administrators are invited to the Twin Rivers Second Saturday Seminar, free professional development, on Saturday, October 10.  The featured speaker, Jo Gusman, will present Foundation - Framework - Tools:  A Brain-Based Approach for Meeting the Needs of Your Culturally and Linguistically Diverse Students from 8 to 10:30 am.  Other outstanding sessions, from 8 to 10 am and 10:30 am to 12:30 pm, include Culturally Responsive Instruction, 21st Century Learning, Tips for Parent Conferences and more.  Click here for details.

To kick off the new school year and inspire educators to learn more about video production and the annual SEVA (Student Educational Video Awards) contest, SECC (Sacramento Educational Cable Consortium) is holding a training day on Saturday, October 17 from 8:30 am to 4:00 pm at Inderkum High School in Natomas.  Additional evening events will follow in November and December.  For more information, click here or call 916.920.1066.

North Area residents are invited to the Second Annual Cops and Community Celebration on Saturday, September 26 from noon to 5 pm at the William J. Kinney Police Facility.  This event is free and provides an opportunity to meet neighbors, police officers and elected officials. 
Twin Rivers teachers are invited to a no-cost workshop presented by Daniel Orey, Ph.D., a math professor at California State University, Sacramento and a Fulbright scholar, who will offer insight on how to embrace the cultural diversity found in Sacramento's classrooms.  Activities include hands-on stations displaying games from around the world and a "math safari" searching for math in architecture.  Participants will receive a copy of the GEMS (Great Explorations in Math and Science) guide, "Math Around the World."  This workshop is offered on Wednesday, September 30 from 4 to 7 pm at SMUD's (Sacramento Municipal Utility District's) Energy and Technology Center.  A light dinner will be served.  Click here for registration information.
 
Our Facilities Planning and Construction Department is sponsoring a bus trip on Sunday, October 25 to the Oakland Raiders vs. New York Jets football game.  Proceeds will benefit the Grant High School Sports Health Academy
