Hi Everyone.  My name is Kim Trewhella and I am a Certified Health Coach with Take Shape For Life.  Maybe you have heard of us, after all Take Shape For Life actually got started right here in Portland seven years ago by our Medical Director and Co-Founder, Dr. Wayne Scott Andersen (see photo insert).  Over the course of the next several weeks, I am going to quote Dr. Andersen from his new book, Dr. A's Habits of Health, and share with you some of the most common sense, practical advice on many topics having to do with diet, exercise, keeping the weight off, and "the Habits of Health" that will allow us to go from surviving to thriving.  Enjoy!  Kim and Steve with Dr. Anderson

"Changing lifelong habits takes effort and can be stressful at times, especially in the beginning.  Just remember, this book isn't the product of medical research alone, or of my thirty years as a physician.  It was forged through real life experience-from the experiences of the thousands of people I've helped to reach a healthy weight and live a healthy life.  I've fought alongside my patients in celebrating their successes.  And with each and every one, I have listened and learned what works and what doesn't, what's easy and what's hard.
 
This book is the culmination of those experiences.  It's about good habits and bad ones--about making a fundamental choice to create optimal health.  I've made that choice, and I know that you can too. 
 
Think of this as the roadmap for your journey to optimal health.
 
We begin in Part One by teaching you the knowledge you need to prepare for your journey.  After all, getting where you want to go depends on knowing where you are right now, and understanding what you're up against.  Part Two takes you through three distinct phases that help you master practical tools for long-term health.  And in Part Three we will study the principles of longevity--ways to extend your life and enjoy your newfound health with every step.

You'll come to understand why it's not your fault that you're overweight and unhealthy.  You'll learn what I mean by "optimal health," "non-sick," and "sick," and discover how your choices are leading you down this continuum, eroding your health.  And we'll help you change the very way you look at your weight and your health by exploring your motivation and learning how to make the fundamental choice to be healthy--a choice available to each and every one of us.  Together, we'll outline a specific path that will bring you to a state of health you never thought possible, and we'll do it in baby steps.
 
Part One concludes with and in-depth assessment of your current state of health.  We'll explore aspects of your life beyond just lab results and blood pressure, to paint a complete picture of your current habits and lifestyle-to make sure we're touching on all the factors at work in your journey to optimal health."
