Hi Everyone. My name is Kim Trewhella and I am a Certified Health Coach with
Take Shape For Life. Maybe you have heard of us, after all Take Shape For Life
actually got started right here in Portland seven years ago by our Medical
Director and Co-Founder, Dr. Wayne Scott Andersen (see phot0 insert). Over the course of the next
several weeks, I am going to quote Dr. Andersen from his new book, Dr.
A's Habits of Health, and share with you some of the most common
sense, practical advice on many topics having to do with diet, exercise, keeping
the weight off, and "t he Habits of Health" that will allow us to go from
surviving to thriving. Enjoy!
Here is your first excerpt:
"Let's start with the
stark facts:
In the US alone, excess weight, obesity, and inactivity
are reportedly responsible for about 300,000 deaths every year.
Complications from obesity, including increased risk of
coronary heart disease, type 2 diabetes, stroke, osteoarthritis, and certain
cancers, now account for over 9 percent of all health care costs.
Surveys indicate that at least 66 percent of American
adults are now overweight or obese, and that obesity is increasing at an even
faster pace among children. As a result, the coming generation may actually
have a shorter life span than their parents for the first time in American
history.
According to research, adults make
at least 200 food choices every day. Learning to make better choices in terms
of specific foods, portion size, and physical activity could maximize our
ability to counter the pervasive environmental influences that make attaining
and maintaining a healthy, stable weight so difficult. In the end, though, hard
facts and theoretical concepts like these aren't really all that useful or
motivating for those of us who struggle daily with the battle against weight
gain. What is useful, then?
The goal of Dr. Andersen's groundbreaking
new book is to shift the emphasis away from passive reaction to disease and
toward individual responsibility for health--to encourage people to create
health in the first place, rather than stand by while the negative forces of our
society erode their health. As the founder and director of the Johns Hopkins
Weight Management Center in Baltimore, a clinical and research program devoted
to helping people who are obese, I've treated thousands of individuals w ith
weight problems. In the course of this work, I've become convinced that we must
move toward a new era of medicine, one that focuses on fostering optimal health
and preventing health problems before they appear.
Dr. Andersen's book
offers a new paradigm--a simple, practical way for people to change their habits
and lifestyle by building on small, easy, almost imperceptible steps. While
this may go against our tendency to view change as a dramatic break from the
past, change is in fact often easiest, and easier to make permanent, when it's
gradual--a journey. In the journey, reaching a healthy weight is a starting
point, not an end point, and this in itself helps create the momentum that moves you forward toward change, rather than backward into old behaviors. The
ultimate goal is to continue this forward movement toward optimal health. As
Dr. Andersen explains, that goal will look different for each of us, but the
decision to take our health into our own hands is the critical first
step."
