A Message from our President, Lynn Ward

Looking back at the summer that's just ended, I'm hopeful you've found some time to rest and recharge. There are a number of exciting events taking place as we begin that 'return to routine' that accompanies the start of every fall season.

The next YPOWR Networking Social will take place at Vasi's Restaurant, 1700 Watertown Avenue, Waterbury, on Thursday, September 13.

The annual Malcolm Baldrige Awards Dinner will be held on Tuesday, September 18 at the Aqua Turf. Award recipients are: Malcolm Baldridge Community Award - Fritz Blasius, of Blasius Chevrolet Cadillac; Leadership Award - Mary Rosengrant-Chiappalone,of Biondi & Rosengrant; and Volunteer Award - John Famiglietti, of Drubner Commercial.

Join us for our September Out for Business, which will be held at Sullivan Brothers, LLC. on Thursday, September 20. On Tuesday, October 2, learn what you need to know about the Connecticut Health Insurance Exchange during a morning forum at the Harold Leever Regional Cancer Center. As a business owner, the Exchange will act as an outlet to give you and your employees a clear understanding of your health care benefits and options.

Finally, be sure to join us on Thursday, September 27, as the Fireball Run comes to Waterbury! There will be many family-oriented activities on the Waterbury Green that afternoon as our community promotes itself on the world stage as part of efforts to help recover missing children. Cheer on our local teams including Chamber members Dr. Peter Jacoby, Paul Largay, Stan and Melissa Piurkowski as they travel 2,500 miles from Ohio to Maine. Following the activities on the Green, Chamber members are invited to meet participants in Fireball Run at the exclusive dinner party at the Palace Theater from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Please call the Chamber for tickets and see www.waterburyfireballrun.com for complete event details.

Best regards,

A Message from our Membership Director, Cathy Dalton

Last month we talked about the benefits that Chamber members can receive by being able to take advantage of discounted and richer insurance products specifically designed for businesses through the Chamber Insurance Trust (CIT) program. Members also benefit when they market their product or service through the Chamber's 'member to member' program.   The program is based on our mission to 'drive business to business' by encouraging members to support other members. A list of cost saving incentives provided by members can be found on pages 18 and 19 of our newly distributed 2012-2013 Directory and Resource guide, and on the Chamber's website homepage, a click through the handshaking picture will bring you to our most updated listing.

Why would you want to participate in this program? There's an easy answer to that question. It's a benefit that comes with no additional cost, is a marketing opportunity and is also an opportunity for you to further encourage other members to support your business product(s) or service(s). How do you take advantage of this marketing and cost saving benefit? Contact Diana Drysdale at ddrysdale@waterburychamber.com or call 203-757-0701. Diana will assist you with your posting and provide guidance on how the program best works.

I encourage you to take part in our 'member to member' program and when you need a product or service, please support other members by checking out the latest listing of 'member to member benefits' and you may be pleasantly surprised to find exactly what you're looking for, and with a discount! View our current listing of benefits here.

Interested in showcasing your company to over 750 potential consumers at the 2012 Business Women's Forum, click here!

We are proud to announce Elizabeth Vargas as our Luncheon Keynote Speaker at our 30th Annual Business Women's Forum.  As an award-winning anchor of ABC News 20/20 and correspondent, Vargas has traveled the world covering breaking news stories, reporting in-depth investigations, and conducting newsmaker interviews. She won an Emmy in 2000 for Outstanding Instant Coverage of a News Story for anchoring live coverage of the Elian Gonzalez case. The New York Times credited Vargas in November 2004 as reinvigorating the news magazine format with her "intellectually brave" reporting of an examination of the 1998 murder of Matthew Shepard. In 2003, she hosted In the Shadow of Laci Peterson, and she anchored Jesus, Mary and Da Vinci.

Our morning motivational speaker Dennis Snow will be joining us this year as well and will bring over 20 years of experience with the Walt Disney World Company to our audience. Dennis launched a division of the Disney Institute responsible for consulting with some of the world's largest companies. During this time, he presented to audiences around the world, and this division became the fastest growing venture of the Disney Institute and experienced repeat business of nearly 100%. He also spent several years with the Disney University, coordinating the Disney Traditions program which is universally recognized as a benchmark in corporate training. In his last year with Walt Disney World, Dennis' leadership performance was ranked in the top 3% of the company's leadership team.

To start our morning off, Associate head coach Chris Dailey will speak. Dailey has been instrumental in teaming with head coach Geno Auriemma to build UConn into an unquestioned national power. Under her direction, Connecticut's recruiting base spans the nation and the globe, with players joining the program from 29 different states, the District of Columbia and six foreign countries. In Auriemma's absence during the entire 1997 BIG EAST Conference Tournament, Dailey served as head coach, leading Connecticut to its fourth consecutive BIG EAST Tournament Championship. Dailey was honored in 2005 with the Distinguished Alumna Award from the Neag School of Education Alumni Society.

CT Web Factory Improves OptiCare's "Sight"

CT Web Factory transformed OptiCare's two websites into one optimized site, OptiCarePC.com, to help properly showcase their bustling business. The challenge was to provide an in-store OptiCare brand experience online through a strategic redesign and merging of the two sites into one, OpticarePC.com. The solution was to convert the site into searchable content, integrate social media outlets, and make it mobile friendly. Photography was done specifically for the site to showcase all 18 Connecticut locations and a content management system was implemented so OptiCare can manage their own site and make updates themselves. Started in 1999, CT Web Factory is located in Wolcott. They specialize in original web design, search engine optimization, and branding. For more info, please visitwww.CTWebFactory.com, call 203.565.6578 or email sales@ctwebfactory.com.

Naugatuck Savings Bank originates $111 million in loans during first six months of 2012

Naugatuck Savings Bank lent $31 million to businesses and $80 million to individuals and families through the first half of 2012. The loan origination helped the bank earn $2.1 million for the six month period ended June 30, 2012, a 35% increase over the same period last year. Charles J Boulier III, President, commented that "we are very pleased with these results. The earnings growth can be attributed to the success the bank has had in growing our deposit base through our branching, virtual banking strategies, and deploying these funds in loans to our residential mortgage and small business customers. The historical low home mortgage rates significantly increased the loan refinance activity which provided many of our customers with lower monthly mortgage payments."   Mark Yanarella, Chairman and CEO, added "Highlights from the first six months of 2012 include the launch of Naugatuck Savings Bank's mobile banking product which gives customers access to banking 24/7 from their mobile device; the opening of the Bank's 18th branch at 3670 East Main Street, Waterbury in April, and the third annual Community Awards Program held in May, at which 35 local nonprofit organizations were awarded grants voted on by Bank customers"

Total assets as of June 30, 2012 are $953.7 million, an increase of $38.1 million or 4.2% for the six month period. Growth in deposits of $38.7 million, or 5.2%, funded the asset growth. These funds were invested in loans and short term investments. Total loans are $760.9 million compared to $749.6 million as of December 31, 2011.
