 I can't lose weight!!

So you've found your mojo in the gym and your focus and intensity are great during your workouts, but you just can't seem to meet your goals. Sound familiar? The majority of your workout gains will be seen only when your diet is on point. So why is it so hard for us to stick to it? Well, for one reason we may be hardwired for it. Scientists have been researching human brain function as it relates to eating and the feeling of satisfaction and excitement when visually seeing and eating foods that are high in fat and sugar. Some people truly lack the ability to feel satiated or their brains aren't registering that they have satisfied their "craving" once they taste the food. Sometimes, eating is purely habitual or serves as an emotional crutch. Any way you look at it, overeating or not eating the right kinds of foods will surely sabotage your workout efforts. Let's take a look at the most common reasons people are unable to reach their goal weights:

1. Emotions: Eating when you're depressed, celebrating with food, or eating to fill a void or to create a distraction are all common reasons people overeat. Before you overindulge, evaluate if you are truly feeling hungry or if you may be experiencing a stressful situation. Wait 15 minutes before you give into your emotional craving bc that's how long it takes for a craving to subside. Work out, read a book or meet with friends to help you refocus yourself.

2. Habits: Whether self created or handed down from our family, habits can be hard to break. "Clean your plate" or "Have some ice cream, it'll make it stop hurting" are phrases you might have heard growing up. While our parents thought they were instilling good values or helping us feel better by using food as a band-aid or reward, they created an association with food. Now that we are adults, we have to take charge and control our relationship with food. It takes 30 days to create a new habit. Commit to 30 days of exchanging your nightly ice cream with fruit or protein shake.

3. Overeating: in this super-sized society we are consuming almost twice as much food as our parents did. Just because you have a full plate in front of you doesn't mean that you are required to eat everything on it. Familiarize yourself with serving sizes and ask for a to go box when you get your meal and place half of your food in it before you begin eating. You'll be surprised that you can re-train your stomach to feel full on smaller portions. Eating every 3 hours will also help keep you from becoming so hungry that you overeat at one meal

Top 5 supplements every  woman should take

Centuries ago, food was all we needed to fulfill our daily need for vitamins and minerals. Nowadays, food is devoid of nutritional value and we are bombarded by external environmental forces that challenge our immune systems. It more important than ever to supplement our diets and as a woman there are some supplements you shouldn't be without.
  • Woman's Multi-Vitamin. Yes, there are specific women's multis that offer more ... b vitamins, c, e.  It is important that you don't just pick any run of the mill Vitamin that is "one size fits all" because as we know we are all NOT "one size fits all".  For those "OPRAH" fans out there that listen to Dr OZ, he has come up with a great combination of what a woman needs and doesn't need.
  • DHA/EFA or essential fatty acids- Fish oils keep your skin and brain functioning and help counteract hormonal ups and downs as well as provide you with healthy fats that you might not be getting in your diet, unless you eat fish 3 times per day...YUCK.
  • Calcium- very important for a woman as you are already fighting bone degeneration as you age.  Helps with preventing osteoporosis and aids in absorption of other nutrients.
  • Amino Acids- precursors to hormones and calm the adrenals for those of you who are energy drink or pill junkies.  Amino Acids are the building blocks of protein and help repair the muscle after a hard workout.
  • Protein- women lose muscle mass every year they age, so it is important to train with resistance and weights.  After training you need the proper amount of protein to help the muscle recover and grow stronger (NOT BIGGER) but leaner and stronger.

Crossfit....Fad or Fitness?

As the need for combining resistance training and a cardiovascular routine becomes repeatedly confirmed by science, so do new and unique ways of marketing an old exercise routine.  From the fitness systems touted on late night infomercials like "7 minute abs" to "P90X" there will continue to be new ideas coming our way in the form of "revolutionary" ways to get in shape.  Cross fit is one of the popular recently advertised workouts sweeping the nation. It's grown in popularity due to its alternative approach to traditional weight training.  Is Cross fit the next best thing in fitness?  Or is it just another way to piece together moves and work out principles that are already known to us?

While the idea of Cross fit may be new, the exercises and routines practiced are far from revolutionary.  Crossift uses explosive exercises set within a specified time minimums and maximums in order to maximize the most reps possible in the time allotted.  These routines and exercises are done back to back with little to no rest as to see how fast one can get through an entire cycle.  Basically, the workout is a beefed up circuit training routine with some serious metabolic and muscle building potential.

Many different kind of exercises are utilized within the Cross Fit workout, however the main followers tend to stick to the basics that are more functional and bodyweight based.
Some of these include, Russian kettle bell exercises, tire flipping, hitting a tire with a sledgehammer, pull-ups with momentum "the kip", rowing, running, muscle-up, and there are more.  Most of these are geared towards fast paced movements with the most force possible.  Force = mass x acceleration, so in essence moving the most amount of weight you can in the fastest time possible.  Cross fit also has the "WOD" which stands for workout of the day where followers around the country can login to find out what workout to do that day and then compare scores the next day with their buddy doing the same thing across the country.

Be aware while this is a great way to workout, it is not for the beginner.  Cross fit works best on trained muscles that have the endurance, strength, and flexibility to be able to accommodate such fast movements with such little rests.  As a beginner your job is to fix postural deviations, create muscular endurance and strength, and learn to properly complete a movement without the risk of injury.  Once you have trained your body to handle these stresses then, and only then are you safe enough to try these movements of Cross fit.  Like a gymnast you wouldn't try a triple back flip in your first series of training until you have conquered your first flip.

Another concern amongst the community is rhabdo (Exertional rhabdomyolysis), which is muscle damage that arises from overexertion of the muscles.  It can happen to anyone, but usually occurs in the untrained, or when high-heat/high-humidity conditions are present and an individual is severely dehydrated and fatigued.  Some other factors that can increase the risk of developing rhabdo are:  training at high altitude, repeated eccentric muscular contractions (i.e. doing "negatives"), recent viral illness, and taking cholesterol-lowering drugs (i.e. statins).  It can, and has, happened to military recruits, marathon runners, "weekend" workout warriors, and, yes, even experienced CrossFitters
