June is Feline Month!

June is national Adopt-a-Shelter-Cat month. Whether you're a cat owner or just about to
bring home a new addition to your family, feline nutrition is important. There are many myths circulating about what
cats should and should not eat, not to mention what's healthy for cats in
general. Experts agree the best diet for cats is a specifically
formulated raw food diet. Cats that eat
a raw food diet have been shown to have lower incidences of serious medical
issues including diabetes, obesity, intestinal issues, urinary tract infections
and cancer. There are three main parts of the feline diet that need
attention. They are meat, fiber and
vitamins/minerals. All are important and
play specific roles in feline health.
Meat, and more specifically organ meat, plays a significant role in a
cat's daily diet. Raw meat provides protein,
taurine and enzymes that are vital to your cat's health. Taurine is a nutrient that your cat cannot
make within its own body (unlike other animals). It is found in its highest concentration in
organ meat, and thus feeding organ meat as often as possible will greatly
increase your cat's health. Fiber, for
many reasons, is important as well.
Although cats are carnivores and fiber doesn't give them any extra
energy, fiber aides in maintaining good colon health, fights obesity and helps
to avoid diabetes. (And if a cat already has diabetes, fiber helps in controlling
it.) Fibers can be found in grains, rice, corn, and bran or nut hulls. This is why we use all natural corn meal (no
by-products here) and oat flakes in our Sojos European-Style Cat Food mix. Finally, vitamins and minerals play an
important role in the health of your cat as well. Calcium, magnesium, iron, sodium and
potassium are the key minerals in your cat's diet. Vitamins A, D, E and K are also vital to
their health. Sojos Cat Food mix uses
Oat Flakes and Yellow corn meal as primary sources of calcium, magnesium, iron,
and potassium. Barley flakes are a
source of more than 40 different enzymes, minerals and vitamins. The addition of marjoram and parsley leaf
along with buttermilk and kelp powders promote healthy digestion and support
not only the immune system but the liver, kidneys and blood as well.
Cats
can be finicky, especially when transitioning foods. Take a look at this article if you're
