Hot Weather & Your Pet

With summer fast approaching, it's time to start thinking about how hot weather affects our four-legged friends.  Both summertime activities and hot weather pose special risks for our animals:
·    Make sure your dog has a shady place to rest if they are left outside for a longer period of time.
·    Make sure they have access to plenty of fresh drinking water.
·    Remember to never leave your dog in a closed vehicle on a hot day - where temperatures can rise to over 100 degrees in mere minutes.
·    Limit strenuous exercise to early morning and evenings when heat is less.
·    If you walk or run past lawns that have been chemically treated, make sure to keep your dog off of the grass.  These chemicals can be extremely toxic.

If your plans include the beach, make sure your dog has plenty of fresh water available (salt water can make your dog sick).  Speaking of the water, if your plans includes a swim follow these tips to ensure your dog has a safe dip in the water:
·    Most dogs like the water, but some can't swim. Be aware of their habits, likes and dislikes and make sure to test out their swimming skills before cutting them loose in the water.
·    Start in shallow water.  Encourage your dog with toys or treats.
·    Never throw your dog in the water.
·    Swimming is hard work (especially when you're armed with little paws instead of Michael Phelps-sized mitts). Watch your dog to make sure they don't overdo it.
·    Never leave your dog unattended in the water - this includes backyard pools. Make sure they know where the stairs are at - dogs can drown easily in pools if not supervised.

Finally, it's important to recognize the symptoms of heat stroke.  If detected early, you and in some cases your vet can take the proper steps to ensure a full recovery!
·    Early symptoms include: heavy panting, rapid breathing, excessive drooling, bright red gums and tongue and standing 4-square, posting or spreading out in an attempt to maintain balance.
·    Advanced symptoms include: white or blue gums, lethargy (unwillingness to move), uncontrolled urination or defecation, labored and/or noisy breathing and shock.

What should you do if you see these symptoms?
·    Apply rubbing alcohol to the dog's pads
·    Apple ice packs to the groin area
·    Hose down with water
·    Allow dog to lick ice chips or drink a small amount of water
·    Offer Pedialyte to restore electrolytes
·    Seek medical attention from a vet if you cannot get your dog cooled down or advanced stages of heatstroke are present.

Sojos Q & A

Q: What is freeze-drying, and what are the benefits?

A:
Freeze drying is a process that removes water from food at extremely low temperatures.  Freeze drying is unique because unlike dehydration, which heats up the food to evaporate the water (resulting in some nutrient loss), freeze drying removes the water by cooling the food quickly enough to skip the solid state of water and move directly from liquid to gas in a vacuum chamber. This preserves the food and makes it easily storable at room temperature for long periods of time (in some cases up to 25 years), while not only maintaining its shape, flavor, texture and but also all original nutrients. Sojos believes in maintaining as many bio-available nutrients as possible which is why we use freeze-dried RAW turkey in our SOJOS COMPLETE dog food mix.

Sojos Q & A

"My companion Rose is a 14 year old Golden Retriever.  She was diagnosed with a large tumor on her liver and her hips were so bad that she was beginning to fall frequently.  She couldn't walk very far, and was often obviously not feeling all that well.  The wonderful folks at Loveable Pets in Billings, Montana recommended Sojos.  I started her on the Grain-Free Veggie and Fruit version about 6 weeks ago.  She is a different doggie.  She shows no symptoms of a tumor, has a spring in her step, walking farther and not falling and eating much better.  She is obviously feeling better, so thank you!"
