MESSAGE FROM OUR PRESIDENT, ANGINETTE JORREY Our business trip to the 2011 SHOT Show in Las Vegas was a big success for women in the outdoors and DIVA WOW. I personally want to thank your Ambassadors at the SHOT Show. They were Judy Rhodes, Cynthia Desch, Cheryl Long, Angela Schwendeman, Mari Juarez, Diana Wysocki, Shami Biffle and myself. Get ready for 2011! SAVE DATE 3/19 for first annual DIVA WOW General Members forum in Dallas - details coming soon. It will be an all-day event and luncheon of news and brain storming.

It was believed that wearing the bracelet would protect against harm, sickness, and misfortune. The four knots symbolize the powerful forces of life: the sun, wind, fire and water. The strands, which circle throught the knots depict the seasons of the year. Movement of the knots along the wire blends the forces of nature with life's continuous evolution and brings strength to the wearer. DIVAS GO DUCK HUNTING WITH DUCKS UNLIMITED
FROM JANE METZ (2ND ON LEFT BOTTOM) DU invited 10 women from across the country (you might know some of them like Deb Ferns with Babes with Bullets from Arizona) to go duck hunting in the wood timbers for 3 days. DU was gracious to provide all expenses including air fare, gear, waders, guns, ammo etc....It was SO much fun! We also received a gift certificate to Mac's and a engraved decoy from RNT. DU also commissioned me to do a painting of the hunt. Congrats Jane!

DIVA HUNTING TROPHIES
FROM VICKI CHADWICK First deer of the season for me at our Cedar Mountain Ranch in Cisco, TX.

FROM NEW DIVA KIMBERLY PENICK My dad and I went hunting for quail in Corsicana at upland bird county. It was an awesome trip- just want to share some pics! I meet a guy named Terry and told him bout the DIVAS - he wouldn't mind putting something together for us. They have cabins there that sleep 12 people, 6 in one and 6 in the other. Yes, they raise the quail themselves but even then they are hard! They also have other birds that you can hunt! They have 8 pastures and it's a good range for hunting! Just think bout it and if it is ever a go, I would love to help plan it!
Editor Note: Anyone interested, please contact KIM PENICK

JUDY RHODES AND SON, HARRISON BRING 'EM DOWN IN TEXAS Sand Hill Cranes are called the "Rib-Eye-Steak of the Skies" Judy & Harrison Rhodes went hunting for these huge birds in West Texas twice in December. Judy was kind to send along the recipe!
SANDHILL K-BOBS Sandhill Crane breasts 1 Can of ring pineapple 1 bottle of Worcestershire Sauce 2 Bell Pepper 1 Onion 1 Pack of whole mushrooms 1 Tbsp of minced garlic Salt, pepper & Tony Chachere's seasonings
First, breast out the bird from the breast bone and thoroughly clean accordingly. Once washed, slice the breasts in 1-inch, or slightly larger, pieces so that they will fit on a skewer. Place them in a container (that can be sealed). Open can of pineapple and pour the juice over the breast pieces. Save the pineapple rings in the refrigerator for grilling. In an approximately equal amount to the pineapple juice, pour in the Worcestershire Sauce. Add garlic (if desired). Place the sealed container in the refrigerator and let marinate for 12 or more hours.
When ready to grill, cut up vegetables and skewer them k-bob style. I alternate each piece of breast meat with a different vegetable or pineapple piece. Grill until fully cooked with a warm red center. Lightly season with Tony Chacere's to taste. Enjoy!

DIVA TESTED HUNTING GEAR This the first in a on-going series of articles on what to wear while hunting in different climate zones and weather conditions around the world. We have many new DIVAS and new DIVAS who choose to learn to hunt need to know what works & where. Traveling DIVAS also need to know what works for their hunting destinations.
Your DIVAnews Editor will kick off the series with how to be comfortable hunting in North Eastern US October-May.
Contributing DIVA: Cynthia Desch Hometown: Washington, PA - SW of Pittsburgh Weather conditions (Oct-May): 10-60F, dry, rain, snow, wind, sleet for deer season. 30-70F for spring gobbler (May) Hunting in the northern regions of the US requires versatility of clothing and layering. I have 2 jackets and one pair of pants, 2 different under layers, fleece vest & top and socks and 3 pair of boots that can take me from 10-F to 70F. I really do not go out below 10F. Your outer gear has to be rainproof, which also makes it wind proof. I've hunted in Northern Quebec and in a single day had sun, rain, sleet, snow and always wind. Rifle deer season in PA is December into January - so the weather is all over the dial. In Pennsylvania, the hunting laws require 200" of International Orange clothing - hat and vest minimum. Hunting in northern states is heavily wooded or tall brush and we have to be seen by people. Deer cannot see color. I like to walk drives, so being able to move freely is a necessity and being able to ventilate while walking. JACKETS: Waterproof/windproof warm w/hood Waterproof/windproof shell w/hood Cammo hoodie PANTS: Waterproof/windproof shell LAYERS; Silk long johns Under Armor long johns Polar Fleece crew or T-neck Double fleece vest BOOTS: Tall 800 gram Thinsulate cammo - waterproof Lace-up hunting boots - insulated and waterproofed Lighter weight hiking boots - waterproofed HEAD: Fleece Bomber hat - reversible orange & cammo Intl Orange lined + earflap baseball hat Same as above in cammo Regular cammo baseball hat Earmuffs Silk scarf at neck - warm and can breath through it Cammo face mask - warm and sheer for spring gobbler HANDS: Windproof cammo Cammo glove/mitt windproof Thin cammo gloves for warmer weather SOCKS: Wool Fleece OR what works for you - heavy socks are NOT always best All of the above clothes can be layered on or off for total warmth. In our recent deer season, the first day was 60F then it went to highs of 25 (15 at daybreak) Here are temperature ranges & layering combination's: 60 - 70F Shell pants Shell jacket Silk top Hiking boots 50 - 60F +Under Armor top +Vest +Silk long johns 40 - 50F +Under Armor bottom +Fleece top 30 - 40F +Heavy jacket +silk top & bottom +Under Armor top & bottom +Fleece crew or T-neck +lace up hunting boots or high boots under 30F Layer it all Warmest boots
BASED ON THIS FORMAT, SEND ME YOUR PREFERRED GEAR FOR OTHER CLIMATES - LOOKING FOR NORTH-CENTRAL, NORTHWEST, SOUTH, SOUTHEAST, SOUTHWEST OR ANY UNIQUE CLIMATE YOU HAVE HUNTED.

ARCHERY ATTENTION DIVAS - please send me your ARCHERY destinations in all states!
TEXAS ARCHERY ACADEMY will be hosting a new series of youth archery tournaments. Locally, Texins Archery Club at Elm Fork will hold the competitions the first Saturday of each month starting in March.
Texas Archery Academy (TXAA) provides structured archery training programs statewide, for all ages; focused on youth development and achievement in the sport of archery. These programs build upon introductory archery experiences throughout the state (such as NASP, Outdoor Adventures, BSA, 4H).
Youth tournament opportunities are further developed by sponsoring local archery organizations and municipalities to host competitions as part of a statewide tournament system called the Texas Cup. This introduces the next generation of archers to safe practice facilities and mentoring.
This growth of the state's competitive archery population creates not only individual development benefits, and greater recreational shooters, but a feeder system to nurture archery prospects aspiring to reach the Olympics! TEXAS ARCHERY ACADEMY

DOWN IN THE HOLLOW
At the moment I am catching up on all my "stuff" and am still on Cloud 9 from being at the SHOT Show. What an honor to represent all of you wonderful shootin' gals in DIVA WOW to our industry "Big Show" We met so many new friends, new DIVAS, new Sponsors and overall was an exciting time. I'll be sending our a Special Edition DIVAnews SHOT Show in a couple weeks.
Meanwhile, I want to send a BIG HUG of THANKS to the DIVAS who take the time so send me little notes - it means a lot and let's me know I'm on track with what you want to hear. If there are any subjects (future columns) you want to see, let me know.
On a home note, I was working on this 2 days ago around 4:30 pm and glanced up to see a herd of deer meandering in the woods - no big deal other than I always love to watch them. But then they started running in circles and darting here, there, everywhere - I call it "fits of madness". I called Kinsley in to see the deer playing - it went on for at least 20 minutes - the chasing and racing - was just the neatest thing to see! I LOVE living down in the wooded hollow!
Another request - when you send me your hunting trophy pics, please also send me YOUR recipe for that game meat. I will print them along with your hunting story and pic. Judy submitted her recipe for Sandhill Crane, which she promised to serve Kinsley & me when we come to Dallas for the Spring Clinic end of March - yummm!
Hugs Cyn
