DIVAS OUT & ABOUT
LIFE MEMBER MARILYN AGEE has been out and about writing a book:
Here is the book I have been working on for the past year.  It is a collaborative collection of short stories and poems.  There are six authors from my weekly writing circle.  These stories are intended to tickle the funny bone, bring a tear or simply entertain.  Our book is available through the following link PERCOLATIONS, Amazon, and Barns and Nobel.  Please click on the link for a look at the cover and a short excerpt.  I am offering a special DIVA discount.  On line pricing is $19.99 and $29.99 for paperback and hard back respectively.  I can offer these for $15.00 and $25.00 for paperback and hardback respectively.  I will also sign and dedicate for you.

Please mail your orders to me or contact me:
Marilyn J Agee

Peachebean@aol.com

At this time I can only accept a check or cash.  Include how many books you want and whether you want paperback or hardback and to whom you want the dedications.  If you want your books signed by all the authors this will take a little longer but I can have that done as well.

PERCOLATIONS
DIVA HUNTING TROPHIES

CYNTHIA DESCH ANNUAL DUCK HUNT
Your DIVAnews editor (me) and the hubs go to Mallard Point Lodge, in Brinkley, Arkansas each year for duck hunting.  This is my 4th time and I finally got it right - the gun that is.  I'm 5'1" and the Beretta youth model 3901 was a huge success.  If you recall from my previous articles, I needed a shotgun with a very short stock to fit when I was all bundled up and found this gem at The Beretta Gallery in Dallas.  The only modification I made was having the barrel ported by MAG-NA-PORT INTL.

The first day 4 ducks came in and we shot 4 ducks.  Second day was wild and I don't know how many I shot (a lot) but I did get a TROPHY GOOSE!  This is a Ross Goose, but in a rare blue phase and according to the Audubon book, this particular goose migrated all the way from Greenland.   He has orange bill & feet rather than the typical pink from "closer" places.  I didn't know at the time how special this goose was as our guide confessed to not knowing much about geese and said it was a white front goose.  When we got back to the lodge the owner went nuts over what I shot.  So when he is mounted, I will show detailed photos of him.

goose

dog We also shot a drake gadwall - to accompany the hen already on the wall and some Shovelers which are new for us.  Lots for the table also.

Austin Powers (his registered name) - the guide's English Retriever with the morning's 4 Mallards.  Austin is a wonder dog and is so shagalicious!

JUNIOR DIVA's FIRST DEER
This is Aspen, age 11, grand-daughter of DIVA Sandra Patak.  Our young JUNIOR DIVA got her first deer hunting with her PaPaw. I wish we could have filmed it, as she followed the blood trail to locate it, flagging limbs with tissue so not to get lost. He had planned to let her take a doe, and she pointed out the cull buck which aged 5 1/2 yrs. She shot it with my husbands muzzleloader (light shot) at about 50 yrds. She helped field dress it, and package it.

Aspen loves being a Jr DIVA, and just loves everyone she has contact with in the organization. She could not get enough of the BB pistol and gun shooting station at our Fall Clinic at Elm Fork.

CONGRATULATIONS, ASPEN!  WE ARE SO PROUD OF YOU!

WILD GAME EATS

DIVA extraordinaire and Life Member, Pat Bullard, hunts around the globe and sent me her yummy recipe for Elk cutlets.  Thanks Pat!

 ELK CUTLETS DELUXE

4 chicken fry cutlets or game meat of choice that can be tenderized for cutlets

1 pint of low fat buttermilk

Sriracha Hot Sauce of Tabasco

1 cup unbleached white flour

1 package shredded parmesan cheese

Salt, Pepper, Garlic and any other spices you choose to season the flour

Olive Oil or any Heart Healthy Oil - I prefer a mix of Olive & Canola Oil - coating adheres better to the meat with this oil mixture

Red or White Wine for Sauce

Soak cutlets in mixture of buttermilk and Sriracha or tabasco for at least 2 hours.

Mix flour, seasonings and cheese in a bowl

Dredge cutlets in mixture - making sure that it sticks to meat in every part of the cutlet

Heat oil to frying temperature

Place cutlets in oil & cook thoroughly being careful not to burn the oil

SAUCE:

Once cutlets are done should have enough oil & remains of coating to cook down with white or red wine.  We prefer the red wine - creates a dark sauce.

Cutlets can be served with pasta, potatoes or spaghetti squash - which is very quick to prepare.  Use a knife to pierce squash in several places. Place in the microwave for 10 to 12 minutes.  Carefully take out - to avoid steaming your hand and slice in half.  Scoop out seeds & use a fork to pull the squash away from the skin.  Season with salt, pepper & a little smart spread & serve with cutlets.

ROSEMARY GARLIC ROASTED POTATOES

1 small bag of roasting potatoes

Crushed Garlic - we use so much I purchase the large jar of crushed garlic to keep in the frig

Fresh Rosemary

Sea Salt & Pepper to taste

Olive Oil

Slice potatoes as you would for au gratin potatoes.  Spray a casserole dish with non- stick olive oil pam.  Place a layer of potatoes then some of the garlic - sparingly as it is potent, a few leaves of rosemary, then salt & pepper, then drizzle olive oil on all.  Repeat this layering to the top of the casserole dish - I recommend about 3 to 4 layers only of the thinly sliced potatoes.  Place in a pre-heated oven for about 30 to 40 minutes at 375 degrees.  They are better if they get crunchy on the bottom

PAT BULLARD

Please send me your game recipes to share with your DIVA sisters! Also gives me a break from writing them - Ha!

LIAISONS

It starts with YOU + 2
As we acquire new members across the country, we hear the need for more events in all 50 states.  A DIVA Liaison is a current member who wants to help get more women & girls involved in shooting and outdoor activities in their area. With lots of help from DIVAS, the Liaison plans clinics, events & shooting days and recruits more women to become members.  Time and effort is well worth the new friends and shooting opportunities and helps you grow personally.  If you are interested in being the DIVA Liaison in your area, please contact Anginette Jorrey at anginettej@msn.com.

DIVAS new to the world of gun ownership, please note that we have the sources for customizing your firearms.  My new best friend in the industry is MAG-NA-PORT from Harrison Twp., Michigan.  I had procrastinated getting my new Beretta shotgun ready for our upcoming duck hunt and finally took it to my gunsmith.  He attached my DIVA card to the barrel and I sent an email to Mag-Na-Port. Donna Wilson was on the lookout for it and when it arrived, President Ken Kelly sent me a message.   I am so impressed with their attention to detail and excellence in customer service.    Most gunsmiths do not have the jig to do barrel porting and you DO want your barrel ported to reduce recoil and improve accuracy.  So please ask your gunsmith to send your barrels to MAG-NA-PORT INTL.

DOWN IN THE HOLLOW
cyn
Well I decided to make the plunge - considering how deeply involved I am with DIVA WOW, the time came to make the BIG commitment and marry the organization as a LIFE MEMBER.  So y'all got me for LIFE!  It truly is a warm & fuzzy feeling.

PA Rifle deer season - that 2 week event I look forward to all year long - was such a disappointment this past season.  I didn't get a deer.  Saw Mr. Big the first day, but he was moving fast through thicket and he then went into deep hiding.  Kinsley got a nice doe so I've re-evaluated our freezer stock and decided to eat down the coveted caribou and then we will book an elk hunt.  An elk trophy is the only missing trophy from our walls of the North American deer family.  OK - the moose was not shot by us - it is the trophy of our bud Pat Keally who begged me to hang it on our wall.

Our deer population was drastically reduced 2 years ago by a wasting disease -  the first wave of the devastation revealed last year in low numbers spotted and again this year.   We also attribute the reduction to the horrible 2010 winter with 3' snow on the ground for 6 weeks.  Many of the doe I saw this year only had one fawn instead of the normal twins.  I shudder at the thought of having to TRAVEL for deer hunting and this is our December passion and source of meat, but it will take some time to build our herd back up. I wish they would leave the neighborhoods and come back out country where they belong!

Happy New Year, DIVAS - here's hoping 2011 is a healthy & prosperous year for you!  The DIVA Team leaves for SHOT Show 1/17 and we are very excited to share with you the new products available in the shooting industry

Hugs
Cyn
