ONDECK's FEATURED SAILOR!

Jim Custer
sails with Ondeck for the MOUNTGAY ROUND BARBADOS RACE.
Here's JIM's story. . .

I had one of the greatest adventures of my life on that Mt Gay Regatta.  The race day began with my very quiet friend, Sarah sharing a pot of strong coffee with me in her tropical Bajan cottage.  I suspect that her quiet was due in part to the quantity of rum consumed the previous night.  Her home is a small pleasant place with the allowance of a sofa for visiting friends.   There are no screens on her windows and she sleeps with a canopied mosquito net around her.  Having been warned, I brought my jungle juice repellant and slept comfortably.

Later, I met my crewmates in Bridgetown and rode the dinghy out to the boat.

After rigging the boat, we paced back and forth under sail around the start line waiting for the moment.  Our boat, Spirit of Isis, was flanked by her sister ship, Spirit of Juno, both Farr 65's.  As we set off both captains had us within inches of banging the bow of Juno into our stern, like a game of chicken.  As we separated and the sails were trimmed, we were well heeled over.

We proceeded towards the north end of the island and the seas were getting heavy.  As we came around to the windward side of Barbados, out in the Atlantic about five miles off the coast, the swells were 20 to 30 feet.  Now Isis had her sail wet and on occasion almost parallel with the ocean.  Having moved to the other side of the cockpit it seemed that I was looking down what seemed a vertical drop into the silver white water that was washing our port side deck, the water itself in a mad dash to get past this creature of a boat.

The skipper at the stern of the boat was watching everything.  His eye was on Juno to judge how she was faring against us.  His eye was on the mast and sail. His eye was on the mountains of water, while turning the boat just so lightly so as not to lose ground but to slide down the back side of the waves rather than crash head on into the valley of the wave.  It was invigorating!

Shortly, we rounded the south end of the island and we entered a drag race to the finish line.  The command is yelled out to send up the "kite", the spinnaker sail, as we fly on the downwind leg towards the finish.

A real adrenal rush intertwined with peaceful moments and beauty all around.  I can't wait to go again...
