00Special Note to ALL Ondeck/OSA Students!

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to sail one of those big ocean-going race boats we all see on the covers of the sailing magazines?  Have you thought about sailing in one of the high profile week long regattas in the Caribbean?  Well here is YOUR chance to do just that!  No matter what your sailing skill level, this year's Caribbean Regattas are open to YOU.

Ondeck is one of the leading sponsors for the Caribbean Regatta Circuit, and is offering single berth charters at a very affordable rates to all Ondeck and OSA sailors on a variety of fantastic boats.

Imagine competing with a team of 10 other sailors on a Farr 65 in one of the Caribbean Regattas for under $2000 per person.  Rates include a training day, a professional Skipper and Mate,  race entry fees, docakge and mooring fees, fuel, food and bottled water whilst at sea, entry to all shore-side events.

OnDeck Charleston has several special discounts for the Caribbean Regattas.  Call us for details.

Antigua Race Week is also open to Ondeck sailors.  Check out this link to see all the wonderful activities that are part of that event.

Or... if the challenge of ocean passage suits you better, Ondeck has single berth charters for the Antigua to Charleston Race (1,250 nautical  miles of ocean sailing) on beautiful 63 and 65 foot boats leaving Antigua on May 5, 2011.

Individual berths start as low as $1,475 and if you call Florence at

843 971-0700, she has some added discounts and incentives to make this opportunity hard to pass up.

Charleston Race Week

April 14 - 17, 2011

273 And Counting

CHARLESTON, SC  - With more than 273 boats registered for the newly re-titled 2011 Sperry Top-Sider Charleston Race Week, the rapidly growing event takes over the title as the United States' largest keelboat regatta. "We're thrilled about all of the talks about titles down here," said Logistics Manager Danny Havens, "and we're happy to be able to welcome so many new friends to our wonderful town and harbor." With dozens more entries possible in the nearly seven weeks remaining until the event begins, Charleston's signature event clearly has come up with a formula that is working. "Of the entire winter and spring series, Sperry Top-Sider Charleston Race Week has become the event that's just way too good to miss..."

Charleston Race Week includes four separate race courses with more than a dozen inshore and offshore one-design, PHRF and IRC handicap racing classes for boats from 20 to 70 feet.  For more information and to register click here.

Melges 24 Miami Winter Regatta Recap : Ned Goss

February 12-13

I had the opportunity to sail in Miami with my team mate Chuck Coyer and teach the new owner of USA 626 Wes Keull and his bow man Stuart Cullinan a little about the Melges, wile giving the fleet a good run for their money.  This would be the second regatta in this class of boat for Wes & Stu so we spent the weekend working on crew work and boat speed.  The Melges 24 is an easy boat to sail, but a hard boat to sail well.

On Saturday we sailed 4 races with a 5, 8, 8, and 8.  With the first race being a 5th place finish, we knew we had speed and that we had potential; but, we knew that our boat handling and ability to change gears would be our biggest challenges.

On Sunday we reviewed our past races and talked about what worked and what didn't.  We sailed VERY hard and we were very atune to keeping the boat going fast and it paid off.  We sailed two races finishing with a 5 and 3 which put us in 7th over all out of 11 boats.  All in all, good crew work and solid speed control was the key for the winners of this regatta.

Next week, I am off to Miami again for the Bacardi Cup with Team Blur with Micheal Miller.  Sail Fast and Sail for Fun!

Follow Le Pingouin's Voyage Around the World

Brad Van Liew has hit the trifecta -- three legs, three victories.

The Charleston skipper sailed into Punta del Este, Uruguay, on Tuesday to win Sprint 3 in the Velux 5 Oceans race. With the fleet more than halfway around the world now, Van Liew has collected every point available to him in the solo sailboat race.

He has not only won each leg, he also has won each timed run, the portion of each leg where race officials judge skippers on how quickly they pass between two longitude lines. read more

ONDECK is a major sponsor of Brad's campaign by making available a complete line of Official Team Lazarus/Le Pingouin gear.
