Hello Friends -
First of all .... February is a VERY exciting month for all of us at OnDeck/OSA. Many of you know that OnDeck (A World Leader in the Sailing Industry) acquired Ocean Sailing Academy as part of their strategy to establish Charleston as their first US location and to serve as OnDeck's headquarters in the United States.
After months of planning and "getting ready" the exciting transition to an OnDeck Sailing Center has finally begun in earnest. New logos, new websites, new boats, and some new faces at our operations here in Charleston are all meaningful changes that will help us serve the sailing community with expanded programs and services. We look forward to sharing the benefits of this transition with you during the coming months.
February is also a GREAT month for sailing here in Charleston! Sure we get some chilly days, but we also enjoy LOTS of 60 degree plus days with amazing winds! Our February students work with our best instructors in waters that are uncluttered by other boaters. If you are contemplating learning to sail or expanding your sailing resume ... look through the course offerings in this newsletter and consider doing it in February. We guarantee you a rewarding experience!

Huge Increase in Charleston Race Week Entries
Race Date: April 14 - 17

Race organizers for the South's biggest multiclass keelboat regatta have the kind of problem everyone wishes they had: there are more boats registering for 2011 Charleston Race Week than anyone expected! "We've been happy to see our event grow so steadily over the past five years, especially given the economic climate for much of that period," said Danny Havens, Race Week Operations. "Still, we're a bit surprised to see that our entry list has exploded for 2011, reaching 100 boats almost a month earlier than we did last year!"
The past decade has seen Charleston gain notoriety as a top notch sailing destination through numerous maritime events. Charleston Race Week includes four separate race courses with more than a dozen inshore and offshore one-design, PHRF and IRC handicap racing classes for boats from 20 to 70 feet. ASK A SAILOR
Q. How does a person dress for February sailing?
A. Water temperature in Charleston Harbor is now 45 degrees. Cool north winds over the water are chilly.
Yet I'm warm. That's because I layer, putting wicking material next to my body, then layers of polypropalene or wool, add a very thin wool scarf, and top it with a quality wind-proof 3/4 length jacket with a high neck. I pull windproof pants over my jeans, and slip on ear muffs and a hat.
I also carry a bag with an extra sweater.
By the time I've put on my wool socks and sailing shoes and some sailing gloves, I'm toasty as a dog on a rug by a fire.
Before long, I start to shed.
