Charleston Bermuda Race: MAY 2011

Once every 2 years a plucky group of sailors joins the ranks of those who race the Atlantic, prepared to face whatever challenges and moods the ocean presents.  The dream of a lifetime for many; a very direct connection with the vast unknown.

There are 2 parts to this fantastic voyage with us at Ondeck/Ocean Sailing Academy.  Join one or both:

1) Race to Bermuda - May 21
The adventure begins with two 3-day training sessions in March 2011.
Then for an additional 3 days prior to the event you join your crew, this time for race and trip planning and prep, after which you set sail and race like the wind.

Cost: $4000 includes race, race-specific training and prep.
Register by February 28.

2) Sail back - early June
...while receiving certification in Ocean Passage

Either stay on board for the round trip, or fly to Bermuda and sail back with us.  In order to attain the entire 1000 miles of blue water passage required to attain Ocean Passage Making certification, we'll layover in Jacksonville before continuing to Charleston.

Cost: $4000 for OSA grads
         $4450 for others

Coastal Passage Certification
March 29 - April 3

6-day instructional voyage designed to build confidence at the helm and chart table, as well as overall seamanship skills.  Designed for the sailor with serious cruising goals.

Highlights include an overnight passage, night approaches to port, man-overboard drills in the dark and sailing to one of SC's picturesque waterfront towns like Beaufort or Georgetown depending on wind direction.  You'll leave this course knowing how to plan, organize and execute a safe, efficient coastal passage of your own in the future.

Certification Gained: Coastal Passage Making

Prerequisite: US Sailing's Bareboat Cruising & Coastal Navigation

This course rewards sailors who arrive with the skills, knowledge and experience beyond taking sailing courses; with such preparation you will be ready to make other coastal passages that demand sharp seamanship and navigational skills.

Cost: $2880

Register by February 28.

Charleston Race Week:
In Shore Racing
April 14 - 17

"CRW has rapidly evolved from a fun, regional event to one of the most anticipated international regattas on the racing calendar, and teams from across the US and Europe," says Logistics Manager Danny Havens.

Enthusiastic One-Design Classes have helped Charleston Race Week explode in popularity in recent years, and 2011 will see the biggest participation yet in numerous fleets.  "We've made 2011 Charleston Race Week the final event in 'The Road To Corpus Sailing Series' which leads up to the May 2011 Melges 24 World Championship in Texas," says US Melges 24 Class President Steve Kopf.  "National and International teams alike are extremely excited to see the biggest M24 fleet ever in Charleston next April, and as a Charleston resident, so am I."

The Viper 640 Class and Melges 20 Class also expect substantial increases in their already large fleets, while larger classes like the Tripp 26, J/24, J/80 and J/105s all anticipate stronger turnouts for the 2011 event.

Free rafted moorage to the first 35 registrants, free pre-event boat and trailer storage and heavily discounted hotel rooms are being offered by Charleston Harbor Resort & Marina.  Registration is found here.

"The weather has not been kind to us since the Leg 2 restart in Cape Town. It has been a very slow and arduous journey thus far. Sailing one of these boats upwind is difficult and uncomfortable. It puts a lot of strain on the boat and I know I was not the only competitor out here concerned about the conditions taking someone out of the race. I am happy to say that with Christmas here, the tides have changed. I am FINALLY sailing downwind in north-westerly winds. It is a welcome Christmas treat! I have about 20-25 knots and we are hootin' along feeling like the boat is happy and well prepared for the conditions. With that happy news, I also realize that this is one of the most remote and dangerous areas of the race."...  read more
