Happy Holidays from the Whole Crew! - December 2010

Hello Friends -

I'm sitting in my office absolutely unable to work.  I keep looking out the window and seeing the most magnificent sunset turning the air and water a fully saturated red/orange.  The shadow of a sailboat cast on the water in my direction is a deep, milky way blue, and the sun coming through the tall sail is as peach as a ripe Caribbean mango.

I don't know which season is my favorite for sailing, I really don't -- the comparison is beyond me.  But during the winter season, I do love to sail at sunset!  If you're looking for a special gift, you'll find one below:

MAY 2011

15% off Charleston Bermuda Race if purchased by December 31.

Once every 2 years a plucky group of sailors joins the ranks of those who race the Atlantic, prepared to face whatever challenges and moods the ocean presents.  The dream of a lifetime for many; a very direct connection with the vast unknown.

There are 2 parts to this fantastic voyage with us at Ondeck/Ocean Sailing Academy.  Join one or both:

1) Race to Bermuda - May 21
The adventure begins with two 3-day training sessions in March 2011.
Then for an additional 3 days prior to the event you join your crew, this time for race and trip planning and prep, after which you set sail and race like the wind.

Cost: 15% off $4000 ($3400 through Jan. 15) includes race, training and prep.

2) Sail back while receiving sail training in
Ocean Passage Making - early June

Either stay on board for the round trip, or fly to Bermuda and sail back with us.  In order to attain the entire 1000 miles of blue water passage required to attain Ocean Passage Making certification, we'll layover in Jacksonville before continuing to Charleston.

Cost: 15% off $4000 ($3400 through Jan. 15) for OSA grads
         15% off $4450 ($3785 through Jan. 15) for others.

Coastal Passage Certification
March 29 - April 3

5-day instructional voyage designed to build confidence at the helm and chart table, as well as overall seamanship skills.  Designed for the sailor with serious cruising goals.

Highlights include an overnight passage, night approaches to port, man-overboard drills in the dark and sailing to one of SC's picturesque waterfront towns like Beaufort or Georgetown depending on wind direction.  You'll leave this course knowing how to plan, organize and execute a safe, efficient coastal passage of your own in the future.

Certification Gained: Coastal Passage Making

Prerequisite: US Sailing's Bareboat Cruising & Coastal Navigation

Also recommended is a fair amount of day and weekend sailing experience.

This course rewards sailors who arrive with the skills, knowledge and experience beyond taking sailing courses; with such preparation you will be ready to make other coastal passages that demand sharp seamanship and navigational skills.

Cost: $3780 less 15% December sign-up discount = $3215

The sun sets at 5:30

It may have happened once or twice before... or maybe you just imagined it... the sky's ablaze in color, the water's on fire, and you are floating smack dab in the middle of the entire universal extravaganza! And you say to yourself,  "Ahh. I have arrived."

St. Michael's church spire is the tallest building on the skyline, and it's only a 1/2" tall.  That's putting the human impact in perspective.

The picture doesn't do it justice.
Imagine being in the middle of it...

Part 5:
Follow Le Pingouin's Voyage Around the World

"Since arriving in Cape Town I have been enjoying relatively long nights of restless sleep. After 28 days of severe sleep deprivation offshore, my dreams have been pretty wacky since offered a more "normal" overnight rest. The transition is a bit tricky. I am always restless overnight, partly out of habit and partly because I really don't want to get out of the groove of the offshore environment. It may seem like we have a lot of time on land, but December 12 is right around the corner. I attempt a nap each day to try and stay in the groove, but it does not always work out."...  read more
