Hello Friends -

Cooler nights and balmy days of November are great for spending the night onboard.  From November through March we offer overnight cruises and classes that we don't offer in the hot months.

Many of our students and guests prefer cooler weather sailing.  With temperatures in the 60s and steady, gentle breezes breezes, it's easy to spend the entire day sailing.

Come out and sail all day, then enjoy spectacular sunsets.  Wake up on board to the smell of hot coffee.

Escape for 6 days
into an intensely fun-filled experience on Charleston Harbor or offshore.  Surround yourself with wind, waves and weather, and learn skills that will contribute to every one of your future sailing experiences.  We teach the cooperative art of sailing as a couple, based on mutual understanding of how sailboats maneuver.  Sailing is fun when skill levels are high.

If you share a dream with friends or family to sail, this is the best time to make it come true.  Now four of you can take private sailing instruction for the price of two.  After these classes you'll know more about sailing than many sailors who have spent much more time on the water.

Our offer includes either of the following U.S. Certified classes:
6 day Basic Keelboat
6 day Basic & Bareboat Cruising

This great excuse to leave the mainland behind is valid for courses taken by March 1, 2011 that are registered by December 31, 2010.

Cost:
Basic Keelboat: $1250/person X 2 (+ 2 people FREE)
Basic & Bareboat Cruising: $1780/person X 2 (+ 2 people FREE)
Provisioning not included.

Weekend Getaway to Edisto Inlet

Want to get away for a beautiful 3 day sailing excursion?  (Want to go forever but 3 days is a start?)  One of our yachts is straining at the mast to head for South Carolina's barrier islands this winter.  This time of year, the coast and the marshes are gorgeous and the weather is scheduled to provide perfect sailing conditions.

Day 1.
Depart Charleston Harbor, pass through the jetties and out into the ocean.  Take a right, head down the coast.

In late afternoon, sail up the North Edisto River between Seabrook and Edisto Islands.  Drop anchor in a protected creek that provides seclusion, scenery, a sunset view and the sounds of ocean waves lapping on a nearby beach.

Day 2.  Wake up and realize you don't have to be anywhere else today and you can do what you want.

The list of possible activities includes:

  • Enjoying a cup of coffee while sitting in the cockpit and watching the herons, egrets and dolphins fish for breakfast;
  • Sailing up some sea island creeks and viewing old plantation houses from the water;
  • Going down below, pouring yourself another cup of coffee, bringing it up to the cockpit and pondering the day a little longer.

Day 3 brings us back to Charleston Harbor by either going offshore along the coast or by taking the inland route up the Intracoastal Waterway, which is not only scenic but offers some fun sailing.

It is a phenomenal trip and it's right in your back yard.  You don't have to fly to the Caribbean to get away for a relaxing sailing adventure.

This is the reason you take the classes.  The experience is here.  Now.

Offered as a skippered charter.  Help with the sail, if you'd like.

Date: 3 days, 2 nights, November through March
Cost: $1320 includes provisions for 2.
Call Florence for additional provisioning for 4.

...magnificent, sparkling Charleston Harbor

The night lights of the city reflect off the surface of Charleston Harbor as serenely as the pale blue glow of sunrise casts its rays onto the warm cup of coffee sitting on the rail of your yacht.  No rush, no driving home: just afloat on a still sea of glass.

Here's a sailing getaway without a destination; a Night Off The Town, an escape close to home but far from responsibility -- romantic, friendly, family... make of it what you will.  This gentle experience comes complete with meals.

Dinner:
Shrimp Scampi with French Bread and Gourmet Green Salad
Breakfast:
     Orange Juice, pastries, fruit, coffee/tea.

Yacht:

Our yachts are beloved by sailing guests who value comfort.  The galley is large with room for lots of gourmet items on an overnight sail.  In fact the living space in general is roomy and extremely comfortable.

Itinerary:

Meet us at our departure dock at Patriots Point, Mt. Pleasant, early evening and sail the harbor.  Your skipper will chose a perfect location to anchor, serve dinner and spend the night; it will be in the harbor and will feel like a world away under the stars... Next morning, wake up on your own time.  After a leisurely continental breakfast, we'll take a scenic sail and deposit you back on shore by mid-day.

Dates: Fall Friday/Saturdays & Saturday/Sundays, upon request
Cost: $1600 includes yacht and provisions
We've just been posted on Trip Advisor!!!

Part 3:
Follow Le Pingouin's Voyage Across the Atlantic

"I am finally experiencing the textbook reaching conditions these boats are built for.  All of a sudden, the pain of working through and around the low pressure system for the first few days seems a sensible trade.  It was a painful baptism by fire but Le Pingouin (LP) and I are better for it.  We are forging a great bond, but more on that later. I don't have all the answers yet to her full cadre of personal charms and challenges.  I can tell you that this boat flat out "hauls the mail" on a flat reach and I have never soloed such a weapon..."   read more

OnDeck OSA Captains Use Mixed Martial Arts,

Subdue Burglar
-----
Charleston Post Courier, Oct. 12, 2010 -- A man got more than he bargained for this weekend when he entered the downtown home of three sleeping boat captains, each armed with a useful repertoire of mixed martial arts maneuvers.

Kilian Hammerbeck was asleep in his downstairs bedroom when he heard someone unplugging his iPhone from the wall... he was still lying down when he grabbed the suspect's arm and forced him to the floor while using his legs to scissor the man's torso...

Racing...
has always been my favorite challenge.  I love it because there are so many dynamic variables. No two days are the same, no two boats, no two crew personalities -- I'm not even the same person every time I step on the boat.
There's very little stagnation -- experiences are always unique, dynamic, variable.

Sailing has so many faces and many sides: it's a life long game.  There are no sharp edges to sailing, it's all smooth and round and keeps on rolling and flowing forward.

What are my favorite sailing accomplishments?

I've been on boats since I was strapped into a car seat on the transom. When I was 12 a turning point occurred.  I won the adult and overall Virginia State Laser Championship... the 'adult'!  The win set off a light bulb.  "Hey, maybe I can do this, maybe I should stick with this one, this particular sport."  Newspapers, interviews, trophies...  I won it again at 13 and again at 14.  It's extremely rewarding to be good at something, to put in the effort and have it come to fruition.

Last weekend we won the ACC's, the first big event I've won with Steve Kopf on Blur.  When we go to a big event like that we're expected to win and then we do win.   ...applying effort, applying successful methodology and coming to fruition.   Having successes keeps people interested in sailing.

Buoys racing is my specialty.  It's fast paced and you get to press the reset button.  Because you do multiple races on multiple days, you can make a mistake and you have an hour to grind out of it, and then you get a fresh start.  It's a new race, the opposite of ocean racing where you really have to live with your mistake for a long period of time.  I really like to push the reset button and be able to start all over again.
