Hello Friends -
Sailing is The Great Escape. Like rock climbing, surfing or white water kayaking, there is no room in the sport for reflection on anything other than the immediacy of the moment.
Sometimes you can't even think about the moment; you just do it.
Each moment flows naturally into the next. And at the end of the day, you feel great. No matter what.
When you escape to a place where beauty and action coexist constantly, and you love the color blue, you're probably a sailor.
Whether sailors go fast or slow, do day sails or offshore adventures... they enjoy escape and a clean workout. Of all the ways to sail, the end result is always the same:
"It was an awesome, excellent day."

Melges 24 Race Training
Learn to Race the Fastest Small Boat on the Water
The Melges 24 is the most
exciting small racing boat and the fastest growing small boat racing
phenomenon in the U.S. today. Charleston Harbor is the site of several
nationwide Melges competitions each year.
OSA is the official Melges 24 training school.
OSA Melges 24 training prepares you for competition in One-Design racing sailboats categories 20 - 70 feet
in length, and PHRF and IRC racing sailboats 22 - 70+ feet in length. OSA classes get you in top shape for this year's east coast races and
next year's 7th Annual Charleston Race Week.
Melges training tutors sailors in a multitude of tricky and competitive situations. As one of the
east coast's best training grounds for racing, Charleston's wind and
currents easily upset a traditional strategic approach. Whether racing
an inshore harbor course or the offshore courses, the conditions and
fronts that roll through the Lowcountry throughout the year challenge
skippers and tacticians from all over the country.
OSA Melges
training also focuses on learning to handle fast-moving fronts, of
which we have many, powerful sea breezes and strong currents up to 3
knots.
+ Calling all women. Compared to larger racing boats, the smaller boats such
as Melges draw a disproportionately large female contingent. Lighter
weight boats are a pleasure for the smaller person to handle, and race
teams search out lighter crew.

Clinic dates: in July Melges 24 Cost: $1890

Between now and September you can progress from...
Novice to Offshore Sailor in 4 Months
To help you gain practice time, we'll provide 3 FREE BAREBOAT CHARTERS BETWEEN EACH COURSE*
A firm foundation in sailing is established during these two 3-day sailing classes,
the sort of foundation from which you can move forward into more
complex boat handling situations. You'll be learning onboard a Colgate
26, a stable yet responsive keelboat.
This is the 3-day classthat teaches you to handle a 30'+ yacht, in other words a live-aboard. These boats handle a little differently than the Colgates; they're
faster and more complex, but with more creature comforts.
You owe it to yourself to learn to be the captain of your boat, whether for a local charter or a trip to the Caribbean. In this course we focus on extended overnights and electronic navigation, advanced anchoring and heavy weather sailing.
Spend 4 days and 3 nights on the water learning and practicing navigation with and without the aid of electronic devices, following 2 days of
classroom theory. You'll learn the skills that are imperative for
getting vessel and crew home safely on an extended sail.
Cost: $4630 Please call 971-0700
*3 FREE BAREBOAT CHARTERS BETWEEN EACH COURSE You
are encouraged to brings guests or to sail with other students. The
boats, Colgate 26s, are generally available evenings from 5:00 - 8:00.

85 year old man with alzheimers goes sailing
 not really his picture.
Old Salt Sails Again
"My 85 year old father received as a surprise birthday present a 1/2 day sail on OSA's "Moon Shot". He has Alzheimers and vertigo, and we didn't know how he would fare. In the company of family and our great skipper Jay, we all had a fabulous sail, and Dad had tears. Every minute, and communication, with OSA has been top quality, and we were able to organize this from Tulsa, Ok! We want to sail again, of course!"

Thank you Nancy! We had a wonderful time with your family.

3 Students Awarded Sailing Scholarships
Demere Board chooses OSA to Teach Teens to Sail
Three high school students in Savannah last month received an all-expense-paid
award entitling them to a week's sailing instruction at OSA. All three
were awarded the scholarship based on outstanding accomplishments in
their young lives and an intense desire to sail.
The scholarship
was established five years ago by friends of the late Demere, a
philanthropist whose family business was Colonial Oil, and whose
passion was sailing. The scholarship was presented May 21 at the
Savannah Yacht Club.
Ned Goss of OSA was the guest speaker. "We
thoroughly enjoy helping these enthusiastic and bright young people
broaden their perspectives through sailing. They are a pleasure to
know and work with."
