Welcome to the second edition of theNational Association of County and City Health Officials (NACCHO) Environmental Health e-newsletter, "The Greener Side of Local Public Health". My name is Michelle Chuk and I am the Senior Advisor for the Environmental Health Team at NACCHO. Our Environmental Health team is constantly working to improve our capacity to provide local health departments and our partners with the tools and information needed to impact public health practice at the local level. This e-newsletter will provide you with general environmental public health information as well as information regarding current projects of the NACCHO Environmental Health team.

Crumbine Award Guidelines for 2008 Released
The Samuel J. Crumbine Award for Excellence in Food Protection has recently released the guidelines for its 2008 program and is now seeking submissions!
The award, named for one of America's most renowned health officers and educators, has elevated the importance of food protection programs within government departments and agencies and has inspired excellence in the planning and delivery of those services.
The Crumbine Award is open to all local environmental health jurisdictions (county, district, city, town, or township) in the United States and Canada that provide food protection services to their communities under authority of a statute or ordinance. The U.S. Military Services and Indian Health Service, if not monitored by a state, county or city health unit, are also invited to compete. Past winners may apply five years after receiving the award.

Safe Drinking Water
A Basic Human Need?
The Pan American Health Organization reports that, 'globally more than 10 million people die annually from diseases related to unsafe drinking water'. Diseases caused by unsafe drinking water remain a serious public health threat. A recently released online resource tool created by the National Academy of Sciences aims to investigate the current conditions of drinking water and identify needed improvements.

Tips, and Tools for Locals
The University of California-Pediatric Environmental Health Specialty Unit (PEHSU) has developed a series of factsheets entitled "Environmental Hazards for Children in the Aftermath of Wildfires". These short blurbs offer parents facts and recommendations on how to protect children in the aftermath of wildfires. Scholarships Available! The 7th Annual New Partners for Smart Growth is being held in Washington DC from February 7-9, 2008. New Partners are offering a limited number of need-based scholarships to individuals representing local governments, community-based organizations, and small nonprofits.
