Dear Environmental Health Leaders

My name is Michelle Chuk and I am the Senior Advisor for Environmental Health at NACCHO.  We are excited to announce our first Environmental Health Newsletter "The Greener Side of Local Public Health".  This e-newsletter will be sent to you approximately every three weeks and will provide you with general environmental public health information as well as information regarding current projects of the NACCHO Environmental Health Team. This online resource will offer you updates regarding the tools and resources produced by NACCHO and partner organizations.  In addition, the newsletter will give you the chance to share information about your health department's environmental health activities and learn about activities in other communities around the country.

At this point in time, the NACCHO staff has collected a list of environmental health directors, environmental health coordinators, and others that we think (or know) are working on environmental health in local health departments.  However, our list is by no means comprehensive.  If you would like to be REMOVED from the distribution list, please contact Nausheen Saeed at [email protected].  If we do not hear from you, we will assume that you want to continue to receive  "The Greener Side of Local Public Health".  If you have colleagues in other health departments (or in your own), that you would like to share this newsletter with, please forward it along.   If you are interested in being ADDED to the distribution list please click the link on the left-hand bar of the newsletter and submit your name to our database.

The NACCHO Environmental Health staff is always working to improve our capacity to provide local health departments and our partners with the tools and information needed to impact public health practice at the local level.  If you have ideas for articles or updates that you would like to see included in the NACCHO's "The Greener Side of Local Public Health" please email them to Michelle Chuk at [email protected].  We are excited and proud of this new service and we look forward to working with you to make the newsletter beneficial for you.

Thank you for your interest,

Michelle Chuk and the NACCHO Environmental Health Team

"Working to Improve Children's Health"
Kid on Bike

When was the last time your child rode his or her bike to the park? Childhood obesity has reached epidemic proportions in the United States as currently, one child in five is overweight. A recent article, in the American Public Health Association's (APHA) The Nation's Health takes an alternative approach to helping children maintain a healthy body weight.  'No Child Left Inside' is one group in a growing movement that is re-connecting children to nature. "If kids aren't bonding now with nature, then who in the world is going to care about it in 10 years?" says Richard Louv, author of the book on this subject.

To read this article, visit "The Nation's Health" link on APHA's Web site at www.apha.org.
