Kids with Kids: The Challenges and Triumphs of Teen Parenting
| On Wednesday, August 18th the Open Media Foundation will be hosting a unique event where young parents will be showcasing their newly acquired production skills and sharing their personal stories during a live studio show. They will exhibit their video projects, discuss the challenges and triumphs they've experienced as parents, discuss the stereotypes they face, and participate in a Q & A about their work.
Please join us on Wednesday, August 18th from 4:45 - 5:45pm to participate in this great event. Reception to follow.
This program is the result of a new internship designed for 16-24-year old individuals (male and female) who have had children. Interns receive training in various areas of video production and are given the ability to create their own videos and launch a social media campaign, creating positive change in the world. Executive Director Report |
Monthly Update by Tony Shawcross
The Open Media Foundation's theme
for this year is "A Higher Definition of Media". While it's true that
we're upgrading our studios this year to HD, that's not what we're
talking about. OMF is part of a movement, an effort to shift the
relationship our communities have with the media that represents, and
often generates, our collective awareness and values.
For the past several decades, media has been characterized by
unidirectional, top-down communications, driven by commercial
interests. But, as the costs for creating and disseminating media have
dropped, the traditional corporate media model is becoming obsolete.
Every day, more and more people engage in the mass communication that
until recently was entirely dominated by only the most privileged
members of our community. As the cost of mass communication drops, the
need for commercialization of that communication disappears, and we have
an opportunity as a community to shift our conversations away from the
hyper-commercial, consumption-driven messaging of corporate media, and
back to the civic and human interests that foster the kind of community
we want to live in.
We'll be talking a lot more about OMF's "higher definition of media" in
the months to come: at our Your Voice, Your Media tours (which are held on the first and third Monday of
each month); at our First Friday events; and at our annual fundraising
breakfast scheduled for this November. We hope that you will join the conversation.

More Grant Opportunities Available Through OMF
| The Open Media Foundation is announcing three new grant opportunities
for individuals and organizations interested in accessing the services,
training, and tools available through OMF. These grants include:
video production services, web development services, Denver Open Media membership, DOM member support, as well as educational
scholarships. For more information, visit openmediafoundation.org/grants.
The next deadline (for most applications) is September 15, 2010. |
Save The Date
| Join us this fall for our 2nd annual Join the
New Conversation Fundraising Breakfast. Mark your calendars now!
Currently,
we are looking for volunteer table
captains to host guests at this event. Not only are table captains crucial in
making the event happen, but also, they have the opportunity to connect
more individuals to OMF and to increase our community support. This event is a free fundraiser, yet donations of any size are welcome and
appreciated. Come learn more about the impact we are having in the Denver metro community!
If you are interested in this opportunity, please
contact Maria Lewis at maria@openmediafoundation.org or 720-222-0159 for
more details.
