Restorative Justice for Oakland Youth - Changing Lives with Circles of Support and Accountability
The Restorative Justice for Oakland Youth (RJOY) program is funded in part to facilitate Circles of Support and Accountability (COSA) for Oakland youth involved in the Criminal Justice system. The ongoing COSA focuses on John, an 18 year old Oakland resident, who was released from a juvenile detention facility in November 2008. The COSA is comprised of John's grandmother, siblings, two community members (a retired businessman and a mother of four boys), as well as two RJOY representatives. John was in and out of correctional facilities over 9 times. In the Fall of 2008, John finally expressed a desire and commitment to turn his life around. Read more about the succes of John's COSA here. |

Measure Y's new program: Juvenile Justice Center and OUSD Wrap Around Strategy
In July of 2009, the Measure Y Juvenile Justice Center (JJC) Wraparound Services program was created to help Oakland youth leaving the Alameda County Juvenile Justice Center reconnect back into the Oakland Unified School District (OUSD) through intensive case management services. The OUSD Placement Coordinator, Probation Officers, and JJC Transition Center staff refer youth being released from the JJC to Measure Y funded agencies. Once referred, case managers at the funded agencies conduct home visits and refer youth to other appropriate programs as part of their individual case plans. Staff from Measure Y agencies, Probation, OUSD and Alameda County Behavioral Health Care Services meet monthly to conduct case conferencing. Each youth's school attendance and academic progress is monitored closely, and they are assisted in successfully completing Court Orders. Since referrals began at the end of August, case managers are now serving over 60 youth. Funded agencies include: California Youth Outreach, East Bay Agency for Children, East Bay Asian Youth Center, OUSD, The Mentoring Center and Youth UpRising. |
