Mayor Dellums Welcomes Oakland's New Street Outreach Workers Last week, Mayor Ron Dellums met with 20 outreach workers being trained by the City of Oakland as part of the Mayor's Street Outreach plan. The Mayor's Street Outreach program, based off of models from Boston and Chicago, is a citywide violence prevention plan that connects city agencies and city funded agencies, including California Youth Outreach, Leadership Excellence, and Youth UpRising, and focuses on various "hot spots" in the city. It is an effort to reduce violence and help redirect the at-risk youth there into more positive pursuits. Click here to read more...

EBAYC - Stopping the Violence
In early January, an East Bay Asian Youth Center Case Manager learned of a violent feud between two rival gangs, a feud that had already left five young men dead in the past two years, and showed signs of exploding into further violence. Through working with students and youth in the area, the case manager learned of the bitter rivalry, and took quick action to address the problem and end the violence.

New Class Begins at the Police Academy On May 20th, Mayor Ron Dellums welcomed a new class of 50 police trainees who are part of the city's effort to boost the department's numbers by 70 officers this year.
While Measure Y provides funding to increase the number of employed officers, city officials have struggled to find enough qualified recruits to fill the positions. Meanwhile, on average five officers retire every month. This new class of 50 recruits means that OPD is on its way toward fullfilling Mayor Dellums' promise to fill the quota of 70 new officers by the end of the year.
