Meet Officer Dodds: A 20 Year Veteran
Officer Dodds

How much more effective is an officer when he has close ties to the community? According to Officer Keith Dodds, it makes a world of difference.

"Working in the communities I grew up in, people already knew who I was when I went into their homes," he tells me. "It gave me an edge. I was viewed less as law enforcement, and more as part of the family."

Walk to End Poverty
walk to end poverty

To celebrate May as National Community Action Month, the Oakland Community Action Partnership is hosting its 3rd Annual Walk to End Poverty and Violence on Saturday, May 17, 2008 at 9 a.m., around Oakland's beautiful Lake Merritt.

This annual community event is intended to raise awareness about the conditions of the 68,148 people living in poverty here in Oakland. Come join us at the Lake Merrit Bandstand for a free 8:00 a.m. registration, and come relax after the walk at the 10:00 a.m. Community Fair! You'll enjoy the live performances, free snacks, and children's activities, so bring the friends, bring the family, or walk the dog to show support for our communities.

For more information, please feel free to visit us on the web at www.OaklandCAP.org or contact us at 510-238-2362.

Oakland Fire Junior Marshal Program

The Oakland Fire Department now has a Junior Fire Marshal Program. These students are taught the importance of a fire safe school environment and are mentored by a fire inspector during their tenure.

The Fire Prevention Bureau, in conjunction with the Oakland Unified School District, private schools and charter schools, select a group of students from Grades 5 to 8, to become Junior Fire Marshals for the school year. Call 238-2391 for details.
