Get to Know a Measure Y Police Officer: Sgt. LeRonne Armstrong
"Sometimes police officers, too, are victims of violence," tells Sergeant LeRonne Armstrong of the Oakland Police Department (OPD). "I grew up in the Lower Bottoms neighborhood of West Oakland, and had to deal with my brother being murdered at school when I was 13 years old. The tragedy of my brother helped me see more clearly the path I was to follow."
Sgt. Armstrong is now a ten year veteran of the OPD, and continues working hard to prevent senseless violence in his native city.

Reclaiming A Neighborhood
For more than ten years, the 900-1000 Center Street neighborhood in West Oakland was overrun with drug dealers and their customers. Burglaries, assaults, and even shootings were common. Law-abiding residents felt like prisoners in their own homes.
Problem Solving Officer Brad Young and his partner, Officer A.C. Smith, were determined to make the neighborhood safe again. And they knew it wasn't going to be easy.

Oakland to Host National Transitional Jobs Conference
The City of Oakland is pleased to announce that it will host the 2008 National Transitional Jobs Conference early next month at the Marriott Oakland City Center. The event, held on April 1st and 2nd, is a forum for employers, policy-makers, and advocates from across the country to share ideas about how to effectively find jobs for the "hard to employ," including ex-offenders, at-risk youth, the homeless, and welfare recipients.
The conference will include presentations by City of Oakland staff and service providers to discuss how Transitional Job programs came to be funded through the Measure Y. For more information, or to register for the 2008 National Transitional Jobs Conference, follow this link. |
