Measure Y Clients, Program Staff, Police Officers Honored in "A Season of Peace" The City of Oakland held its second annual celebration on Wednesday, January 16th, to recognize the efforts of nonprofit programs and police officers funded through Measure Y. The event, entitled "A Season of Peace," was held at the Jack London Aquatic Center, and honored 30 community members for their commitment and service to curb violence and push for A Safe Oakland. The awards were presented by Councilmembers Pat Kernighan (District 2) and Jean Quan (District 4); representatives of Councilmember Nancy Nadel and Mayor Ron Dellums were also present to support the honorees and celebrate the successes of Measure Y.
Measure Y presented its first annual Community Partner Award to Dan McLain and Andre Terlet of Amarak, for their commitment in the private sector to hire formerly incarcerated people who wish to turn their lives around. Also, mayoral proclamations were bestowed to two retiring public servants: Oakland Police Lt. Paul Berlin, beloved longtime commander for West Oakland, and Regional Parole Administrator Shirley Poe, a champion and pioneer of prisoner reentry programs. The celebration also included spoken word and song from the youth of various Measure Y funded programs.

Domestic Violence Reports Double in 2007 -- And Experts Say It's A Good Start
Oakland experienced a spike in reported domestic crimes last year, and experts are pointing to the city's expanded services funded through Measure Y to explain why this is actually a good thing. The number of calls received by the Oakland Police Department regarding this issue reached 7,521 in 2006-2007, nearly doubling the number of calls received in the 2003-2004 period.
While the high rates of domestic violence may seem disturbing, domestic violence victim advocates believe that finally victims are coming forward and reporting the crimes, indicated the numbers of crimes committed is actually not increasing. Experts cite the numbers of domestic violence related homicides is actually at a ten year low. What is increasing is the awareness that Oakland is a city that offers services and protection to those whose suffering often goes unnoticed.
Since the passage of Measure Y in 2004, agencies such as the Family Violence Law Center have been able to maintain better staffed teams, and although these members work long hours to keep up with the increased amount of work, they are more equipped to reach out to those in need.
