Who & What Does God Desire?

The 2012 Presidential Election is nearly upon us. Voters are trying to decide which candidate gets their vote. How does one decide? Do we vote for the one we think will provide better leadership? Do we vote for the one who supports our philosophies? Do we vote for the one we think will better line our pockets?

Someone who has not darkened the doors of the church in some time, piously remarked, "I'm voting for the one God wants in the White House." I couldn't help but ask why he cares? If he doesn't support God, His expectations and requirements for Godly living, why does he care who God desires to be in the White House?

Christianity is serious business. The Gospel as preached by the Galilean, is a demanding way of life. Its obligations cannot be discharged by an occasional coin cast in the Master's direction or by a lazy, well-fed citizen sprawled out on a pew singing, "I Love Thy Kingdom, Lord." Nor can its obligations be discharged by an indifferent view regarding worship, Christian Education (and no, one cannot take the place of the other) and other details of the Kingdom.

While we are thinking about "Whom God desires in the White House," let's consider what He desires regarding worship attendance. Is He satisfied with once a month worship? What does such an irregular, weak pattern of worship reveal concerning the vow you make to worship faithfully? What does God desire?

What does God desire regarding your willingness to grow spiritually? One wonders where the missing 65% to 70% of our members are each Sunday during worship? What does one's regular absence say regarding the vow to uphold the church with one's prayers, presence, gifts and service? What does God desire?!

What does God desire regarding the excuses one makes . . . the parking situation, the leaves, football, hunting, sleep . . .  As to why one's discipleship is so pathetic? The frightening phrase of the Father comes to mind, "I will spew you out of my mouth."

Let's be serious, if more of us truly cared who, or what God desires . . .  perhaps our country, our world would not be in the quagmire we are currently facing. God desires Godly living, faithful service, and serious discipleship. If a person doesn't care about those desires . . . perhaps that person should reconsider bringing God into political conversations.
