                The Master's Life Group

Randy Why did Jesus choose the twelve He chose? They did not have a great deal in common. Some of them were fishermen, one was a tax-collector, another was a zealot. We don't know much about their background. They were different in temperament and in personality.

Why did Jesus choose them? Was it some special quality they possessed, something that caught His eye or attention, some hidden strength He saw in them but not in others? Perhaps it was divine intuition? We cannot know, anymore I suppose that we can know, why life singles us out for some particular role, some responsibility, some intimate human relationship.

There is another sense in which we can ask the question of why did Jesus choose the twelve. What did they mean to Him? What did they have to offer to Him? What did they possess that He did not already possess Himself?

At first glance, they didn't have much to offer Him. They could hardly offer Him prestige, since they were not prestigious. They were not in a position to offer Him a political base, since they had no political pull or inside track. They could not offer Him a financial base. I suppose they might have offered Him advice, but there is no record that Jesus consulted with them before making His plans. It seems like a one-sided relationship in which He had everything to offer them and they had nothing to give in return.

Yet, they did have something unique and priceless to give Him. They gave themselves. They gave Him their love, as imperfect as it was. They gave Him their loyalty, though at times it was flawed by self-interest. They gave Him their physical presence and companionship, even though they were not always around when He needed them most.

In other words, they gave Jesus what every human being needs. They gave Him a special kind of relationship. They gave Him their friendship. Never underestimate what friends can mean to you. Friendship is a gift that can make all the difference in the world.

I hope you'll make a special effort to join us for the next six Sundays as we explore the Master's friends, and strengthen our friendship with Him.

See you Sunday!
Randy
