Mt. Bethel UMC

July 22, 2012

"Our objective as Christians is to understand the story of redemption, the Bible."  This is the primary purpose of every writer in the Old and New Testament- the grand story of redemption.  If you agree with me, then, we must all ask the question, 'What does it mean to redeem?'  The basic meaning is "to buy it."  Therefore, redemption is "the act of buying back."  Paul said in 1 Corinthians 6:20, "You have been bought with a price."

I read a perfect story that reminds me of this:  A little boy had made a small boat, all painted and fixed up beautifully. One day someone stole his boat, and he was distressed. In passing a pawnshop one day, he saw his boat. Happily he ran in to the pawnbroker and said, "That is my little boat." "No," said the pawnbroker, "it is mine, for I bought it." "Yes," said the boy, "but it is mine, because I made it." "Well," said the pawnbroker, "if you will pay me two dollars, you can have it."

That was a lot of money for a boy who did not have a penny. Anyway he resolved to have it; so he cut grass, did chores of all kinds, and soon had his money.

He ran down to the shop and said, "I want my boat." He paid the money and got his boat. He picked it up, and hugged and kissed it, and said, "You dear little boat, I love you. You are mine. You are twice mine. I made you, and now I have bought you."

I love this simple illustration.  So many times we view ourselves as seeking or looking for God.  But it is truly the other way about: he is looking for us.  In His obsession for his redemptive plan he is willing to seek us even when we are in full flight of Him.  He follows us into our darkness;  even in our means to escape him, we run straight into his arms.

"The Christian God doesn't turn away from sinners in disgust but moves toward us, bringing us his redemptive presence (David Benner)."

Through the biblical writers, God has worked diligently to make sure we don't miss His redemption!
