Singing at Campmeeting Our "Campmeeting in the Burbs" season begins this Sunday. United Methodists are famous for our revival-type campmeeting services. These services were usually held in outside arbors in the late summer. People would come from miles around and spend a week or two. Originally, they would stay in tents or homemade huts. Eventually, the "tents" became permanent, crudely-built dwellings occupied two or three weeks out of the year. The services were noted for their spirited sermons and music. Only the old favorites were sung at campmeetings! Today, singing remains one of the most important and enjoyable aspects of campmeeting. Most of the hymns are sermons put to music. I love good, spirited Methodist singing. Nothing is deader or gloomier than a congregation that sings between yawns, with one eye open. God appreciates all kinds of music. I think He appreciates anything done enthusiastically, sincerely and faithfully in His name. Too often, we merely sing the words without living the song. How often do we repeat the motions of worshipping without any alterations regarding our daily living? Consider these thoughts concerning some favorite hymns: 1. We sing, "Onward Christian Soldiers," and wait to be drafted into His service. 2. We sing, "Sweet Hour of Prayer," and are content with fifteen seconds a day. 3. We sing, "O For a Thousand Tongues," and don't use the one we have, as we should. 4. We sing, "There Shall be Showers of Blessings," but fail to attend worship services if it's raining. 5. We sing, "Blest Be the Tie That Binds," and let the least little offense sever it. I think we get the idea. "Encounter," don't think you're not included, too many of y'all just stand and sway! I look forward to singing, spiritedly, with you at each "Campmeeting in the Burbs" . . . faithfully! Randy Mickler Senior Pastor

The Career Ministry of Mt. Bethel UMC will meet on Tuesday, June 12 at the Mt. Bethel Community Center (4608 Lower Roswell Road, Marietta, GA 30068). Resume Reviews begin at 6:30 p.m. / Presentation at 7:30 p.m. NEW TOPIC - How to Interview & Negotiate Pay. Most job seekers find dealing with pay issues to be one of the most challenging components of their job search. How do you address the dreaded questions "what is your current pay" and "what pay do you expect"? Compensation is perceived by most employees and job seekers as a "black box" because compensation management principles, systems, and rates of pay are not openly communicated to either employees or job seekers. This session will focus on preparing you to answer the two dreaded questions as well as open up the "black box" to provide you with the inside information that you need to be prepared to manage all aspects of the pay component of your job search. But before you discuss pay with a prospective employer, it is essential that you prepare for the interview and interview well. During our session we will also review interviewing best practices, resources that can help increase your chances of success, and finally techniques that improve the quality of your phone, video, and in person interviewing.
Vacation Bible School is around the corner - June 11-15 (12:30-3:30) and July 9-13 (9:30-12:30) - and we still need teens and adults to help us mentor to God's children. We have over half who are not members of Mt. Bethel and some who are unchurched. You may change a child's life by being here modeling Christ. Join us for a fun filled week of music, worship and fellowship. Sign up online or call Dianne Hylton for to get more information - 770-971-5074.
