Tithing
I hate tithing.

I hate tithing and I'll tell you why.  I hate tithing because it changes my way of living.  Tithing will not let me look casually at the grace of God and forgiveness of sin offered in Jesus Christ.  It will not allow me to accept grace and then go on my way unchanged.  Instead, tithing reminds me that Christ invites me into a relationship with God, a life of discipleship and obedience.  Tithing moves me beyond "cheap grace."

I hate tithing because it calls me to step outside the drive to consume.  Tithing reveals that I can live just fine on 90% of my income and directs my attention above to the voices that lie so sweetly, "you deserve it," "you're worth it," and "you can't do without it."

I hate tithing because it compels me to trust beyond myself.  Tithing shows that I don't have to manage and control every day of my life.  Tithing is trusting God who provides the means and will convert the gifts I provide into acts of ministry and service for the "Cause of Christ."

In other words, tithing moves me beyond myself, and I just hate that!

Actually, Diane and I have received immense pleasure, joy,and sense of security through our 39 years of tithing together.  Tithing has made us far "wealthier" than we could ever have imagined.

We are nearing the conclusion of our "estimate of giving" for the next 12 months.  The news, thus far, is not good.  Last year this time, 1303 estimate of giving cards had been received.  This year, only 1221 have been received.  Last year $7,794,587 had been estimated for the operating budget.  This year $7,655,891 have been estimated.  I challenge you to tithe.  At least return your "estimate of giving" card.  We can all give something!  We can all move beyond ourselves for His Sake and His Cause.
