Mt. Bethel UMC

April 29, 2012

Randy

Helen Keller, deprived of light and sound, had this to say, "Use your eyes as if you would be stricken blind. Hear the music of voices, the song of a bird, the mighty strains of an orchestra as if you would be stricken deaf tomorrow. Touch each object, smell the perfume of roses, relish each morsel. Make the most of every sense."

Debbie Pierce has helped us all hear the music of God's love for the past twenty-seven years. She was here as a part-time choir director prior to my arrival. At our introduction, my remark was, "I hope we make it, I've been through five choir directors in five years." Debbie's reply was, "Is that a threat or a challenge?!" I knew right away that I had met my match!

Many people miss the incomparable joys of a great friendship. Too many people are too cold-hearted, selfish or preoccupied with getting things for themselves to nurture a friendship. The basis of friendship is delight in fellowship and an unconscious sharing of life's experiences without thought of personal advantage. Never to have known a great friendship is to have missed one of the best things that life can bring.

Debbie has blessed us all with her remarkable talent. To put it plainly, she is simply "one of the best!" Her ability with the music ministries of our church is unquestionable. She and the choir have lifted us to the heavens. They have helped us all better hear the music of God's love. Thank goodness that won't stop! Oh, it will change a little. Debbie won't lead as often, nor will she be seen around the office as much . . . (wait a minute, she's never been seen around the office much!). But she will still be here to assist and direct for special occasions. We all thank God for that.

But what's going to be difficult for me is the fact that for twenty-four years, I've sat by my friend in church each Sunday, and that's over. It's been a "challenge," that's for sure . . . but it's one I will always cherish.

Thank you, Debbie (and you too, Tim - you are a saint!) for all that you have given us over the years. Thank you for remaining in ministry with us, even though you are part-time here, and full-time with your four grandchildren. Thank you for being our friend, and especially mine.

                    God Bless You,
                    Randy

Vacation Bible School is a fun week here at Mt Bethel! We welcome over 800 children in June 11-15(12:30-3:30) and July 9-13(9:30-12:30). Now that you are planning for summer, please let us know which VBS you can work. We need 150 adults and 150 teen helpers to make the week a wonderful experience for the children. This is a perfect setting for a family to serve, worship and experience God together.  Parents, when you sign your child up to attend, let us know where you want to serve as well. As a parent, you are the strongest influence your child has in their life. When they see you modeling Christ, they will in turn make wise choices. Please call or email Dianne Hylton for more information. 770-971-5074 or dianne.hylton@mtbethel.org

Volunteers Needed: Sundays at Mt. Bethel, what an exciting place to be. We are always hopping around here, which means we need you to help out and volunteer. We need parking ushers as well as Sunday phone volunteers.
Parking Ushers serve every 5th week, and get a nifty yellow vest, as well as radios, directional wands and wear a name badge - it is a pretty sweet set-up.
Sunday Phone Volunteers serve on a rotating basis as well.  Each Sunday these volunteers do an excellent job of covering our phones and helping visitors with directions and information.
Please call or email Kibbie Jones at 678-560-7230 or kibbie.jones@mtbethel.org if you are interested or would like more information. These are both great ways to serve on Sunday mornings.

After 24 years of full-time and three years of part-time employment, our beloved Debbie Pierce is returning to part-time status in Mt. Bethel Music Ministry. Debbie and Tim are the proud grandparents of four (three born during the past two months) grandchildren. Debbie is now a full-time wife, mom and grandmother, and part-time Music Director! Sunday, April 29, we will "shift" as Debbie becomes our "Music Director Emeritus." We will rejoice with her, celebrate her achievements and sing her favorite tunes! After the 11:00 worship service, everyone is invited to the Fellowship Hall for refreshments. If you would like to honor Debbie through a love offering, please make your checks payable to Mt. Bethel & write "Pierce love offering" on the for line. Debbie is not retiring!! We will still have her as a director for special events and special singing groups.

The "Rebecca Redd Herring Scholarship" fund has been endowed at the Candler School of Theology, Emory University. Rebecca was a devoted Mt. Bethel member and employee prior to attending Candler. The scholarship will benefit female seminarians from Georgia and Alabama. If you wish to contribute, please mark your check accordingly.

"Fast CPR and AED Training" OR "Learn to Save a Life - Fast and Free!" - Wednesdays, May 2, May 9 and May 23 - 4:30-7:00pm (30-minute training sessions) - CAC Olympia Room - No Charge

Did you know that 80 percent of sudden cardiac arrests happen outside of a hospital and the survival rate is only 8%? This rate has not improved in the last 30 years. Cardiac arrest can happen to anyone, anywhere, at anytime. In just 30 minutes, you can learn to save a life!  If you have not taken a CPR class in the last year, you need to come take this course. Improving survival rates begins with public bystanders. Communities where more bystanders can perform CPR with an AED have improved survival rates by 500%! This is the Eagle Project of Austin Hickox, a senior at Walton High School and a member of Boy Scout Troop 1011. Hands Only CPR and AED training will be held in honor of Jonathan Wenhold. He was a student at Sope Creek Elementary who died as a result of sudden cardiac arrest during gym class in October 2004.  Jonathan's parents, Shellie and Scott Wenhold, and grandparents, Bill and Sally Wenhold, were part of the Mt. Bethel church family. Questions can be sent to austinhickox@yahoo.com
