Mt. Bethel UMC

March 11, 2012

Randy

Recently, Rev. Jim Jackson (Senior Pastor of Chapelwood UMC in Houston, author and friend of mine), addressed his congregation with this article. I pass it along to you as something to consider:

What is an Active Non-Contributor?

Chapelwood is an amazing church. You are, without any question, the most generous church in United Methodism. With very little prompting, you turn in Estimates of Giving every year that enable us to underwrite an ambitious budget - and you pay your pledges!

But in spite of this remarkable achievement, we still            have a significant number of members who give little or      nothing, and these folks do not think of themselves as
hitchhikers. It never occurs to them that they have entitlement issues.

They often resent the letters we write them asking for their Estimate of Giving and most amazing of all, these folks consider themselves to be "active members."

I'm not referring to people who are out of work or have suffered financial reversals. We don't expect them to give - though many of the people in these categories do contribute.

I'm talking about able-bodied, working folks who could easily give, but don't.

It's disappointing. Granted, we have fewer non-contributors than almost any church I know about, but any are too many. We all promised to support the church with our "prayers, presence, gifts and service." Giving is one of our commitments.

I'm praying that this year we'll have more Estimates of Giving than ever before - one from every family . . .

This year's stewardship slogan is "What More Can The Church Do, What More Can I Do?" If everyone became a contributor, think what Mt. Bethel could do for the Lord! We can all do something, and most of us could do a little more.

Randy Mickler

Senior Pastor

P.S. Commitment Sunday is March 25.

Mt. Bethel's Career Ministry will meet on Tuesday, March 13, at the Mt. Bethel Community Center (4608 Lower Roswell Road near the corner of Woodlawn Drive).   Resume reviews begin at 6:30 and the presentation starts at 7:30pm. The evening's topic is Leveraging Technology. Don't just hit apply, use technology as a networking tool to meet hiring managers. By now you know that the Internet has changed job search strategy completely. Use this to your advantage by ensuring that you can be found online easily by recruiters and hiring managers and that your brand is clear.  This session provides an inside look into how Recruiters search for job seekers and how you can leverage job boards, search engines, and social networking to expand access and boost your odds of success in your job hunting expedition.  We'll also cover what your information looks like to recruiters when they're trying to fill an open position.  Last, after attending this session, you will know how to go beyond just the company website by researching your target companies and open positions via Google, Facebook, and LinkedIn. For more information visit www.mtbethel.org/careerministry or contact Kibbie Jones at 678-560-7230 or kibbie.jones@mtbethel.org.
