Mt. Bethel UMC

Dear Friends,

Many of you have asked Disciple Life leaders what is all the talk about "shift?"

The "shift" is simply about having a different mindset in the way we do ministry.  We want to be more intentional about leading the next generation to Christ.  Families lacking a vision for their family will inevitably adopt the culture's vision. Research done by the Barna Group shows that Generation X (born '60's-'80's) has largely been lost by the American church. This group is who will be parenting the next generation of children.

It seems that churches, with all our superior programming, have fostered a mindset to let the "professionals" teach their children about faith and God, but the church or the "professionals" only have about four hours per month with those children, whereas parents have hundreds of hours with their children each month. So, the "shift" is for Mt. Bethel to minister to families as a whole.  We plan to equip parents and grandparents to be spiritual leaders for their children and grandchildren.

So what does this look like at Mt. Bethel?  You will see more opportunities for families to learn, serve, and play together. For example, Charge Retreat for 4th and 5th graders has been limited to the number of parents who could attend. However, this year, every parent who signs up will be able to go. Additionally, there will be bigger celebrations when children accomplish milestones in their faith walk. For instance, when they receive a 3rd grade Bible, we might offer a parent/child Bible study.

Additionally, we want to help foster spiritual leaders who have a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. Therefore, we are asking that everyone commits to a Life Group where community, biblical teaching, and accountability provided in an intimate group setting helps to continually grow our faith.

What if I'm not raising children? Do I still fit in at Mt Bethel? Of course! My husband and I are empty nesters with no grandchildren. We will still be active in our Sunday school class and participate in missions as we always have done. In all honesty, our Mt. Bethel life could stay exactly the same, or we can choose to be a part of this "shift."  For example, we can lead a Life Group - maybe of younger parents or youth. We can mentor a child through Camp Hope or St. Philip. We can simply just have a positive attitude and encourage those we have influence over.

I have been in numerous meetings and discussions concerning "the Shift" we are taking, and it has been evident in every one of them that the Holy Spirit is all over this. I hope you will join us this Sunday at 9:30am for one service as we talk about the "shift" and how you can be a part of it!
