Do you Remember?

The following article was on the bulletin cover the week of September 11, 2001:

God Bless America

There is one constant problem that comes in many forms, the evil that is in this world.  We get up with it in the morning and go to bed with it at night.  Every now and then, some bewildered soul will exclaim, "How can anyone believe in the goodness of God when so much evil abounds?"  Some folks will even declare, "To say, 'God is love' or 'He cares for me' sounds like wishful thinking and nothing more because of all the anguish and pain in our world."

There are no easy answers in the face of such evil witnessed September 11, 2001.  Perhaps the correct question is not "Why?" but "How?"  How does one conquer the evil surrounding the individual's life and the collective evil in our world?  Oscar Wilde once said that there is enough evil on one street in East London to cause a good person to doubt the existence of God.  Perhaps, but the issue does not end there.  What about the good in human life?  Even a person convinced that the forces of evil are all powerful has great difficulty explaining the forces of goodness.

Frankly, I don't believe God provides special protection for His children.  On the contrary, Jesus said there will be hard, difficult, hate-filled tribulations.  He never fooled people into believing that following Him would be easy.  On the other hand, He did promise that He will be with us.

I believe America witnessed the power of His presence and the warmth of His loving goodness many, many times last week.  The forces of the hijackers' evil paled when compared to the power of love witnessed countless times through the sacrifices offered in those who willingly gave their lives for others.  The firefighters, police, priest, volunteers; those who remained with the wheelchair victims, holding hands knowing their death was imminent; the passengers who took control of the airliner over Pennsylvania, all examples of goodness.  When examined, the examples of goodness are much more powerful than those of evil.  Could it be the result of this being "One Nation Under God?"

God Bless America,

Randy

Meeting at the Well - New Date: Tuesday, September 13| 7-8pm | Fellowship Hall - There was a time when women had no other women to talk to. There was a time when their home/tent was their entire life's existence. And, there was a time when their only venue through which they could connect with other women was at the water well before sunrise and before sunset. In our busy, crazy, indeed absolutely insane schedules - more and more, women feel isolated - even though they are busy with other people! Join the women of Mt. Bethel as we find new ways to meet other women and celebrate our relationships! Indeed, we will "meet at the well" to enjoy an hour of dessert and coffee as our own Diane Parrish shares her perspective on why women need to connect. Admission and dessert are free, but please pick up a ticket in the Mt. Bethel Bookstore so we can prepare for all who wish to attend.  Nursery is available by contacting Debbie Ruth at 770-971-2588.

Support Groups

The Divorce Support/Recovery Group continues to meet each Wednesday evening at 6:30 in the "H" House. This group is for those going through one of the most heart-wrenching tragedies that a person can face. Divorce is not the end of one's world, but it can sure seem like it. When people go through such hardships, they need a support/recovery group where they can find acceptance, feel comfortable with, learn from, and have the opportunity to express their emotions with a group that understands.  Trained facilitators help those overwhelmed by the legalities of the divorce process, grieving the hurt of rejection and loss, and confused as to their place in life as a divorcee.  Together we help each other gain confidence and restore self esteem. One need not be a member of Mt Bethel to be a part of this group.  For more information, please call Mike Gilliam at 404-372-7668, Kathy Feldbaum at 770-715-9423 or Wil Parker at 678-560-2801.
