People I Like To Be Around

Have you ever thought about what kind of people you like to be around?  As I have thought about this over the years, I have realized that the people I most like being around are those who like me. I know it may sound a little selfish, but if I am honest, that is the truth. I bet the same is true for many of you. When I asked myself why, this is what I came up with.  They show genuine concern for me, and I know they will be there for me through thick and thin. They see the best in me, oftentimes even viewing me as better than I really am. There is something very attractive about people who are are attracted to who you are.

The current sermon series, "Out of The Upper Room," takes a look at what it means to live as people who have the Holy Spirit within them. This week, we will look at Acts 2:46-47, where it tells us that these early Christians had "favor with all the people," and that means not only with other Christians but also with those in the community around them.  As they lived out the Christian faith with "sincere hearts" and showed true love to those around them, people were attracted to them. God has that kind of love for us and for lost people. The kind of love that cares when we don't deserve it, the kind of love that makes us feel loved when we are pretty unlovable.

Too often, the Christian community makes outsiders feel unloved and unattractive, because we focus on what they are "not" instead of focusing on what Christ "is" in us - One whose love is attractive and irresistible.

It's my prayer for our church that God will so fill us with His Spirit, that like the early church, others will be drawn to Him  by our sincere, heartfelt love.  In other words, we will be the kind of people that people like to be around, and being around us would cause everyone to be more like Him.

Sponsors Needed for the Habitat Road Race
- October 1 - the 18th Habitat for Humanity Road Race will be at Mt. Bethel on Saturday, October 1. Since the early 1990's, proceeds from Mt. Bethel's Habitat Road Race have funded the building of our Habitat homes. It is through the generosity of our race sponsors, race participants and individual donors that our church has been able to provide affordable and safe housing for 29 Cobb County families who were living in substandard housing. Construction will begin on Mt. Bethel's 30th & 31st Habitat homes in early September. We need support of race sponsors if we are to build these homes. If you, your company or your employer would like information about becoming a race sponsor, please contact Mark Taylor at 404-635-6839 or markalantaylor@gmail.com. For more information about the race and race sponsorships, go to www.habitatroadrace.com

Mt. Bethel will begin construction of our 30th & 31st Habitat homes on September 3.

Volunteers are needed to help build the homes and to provide lunches for volunteers. There are 14 build dates available to choose from. You can sign up at www.mtbethel.org/habitat or pick up a registration form on Sundays in August at the Habitat table in the connector. We hope you will join us for a fun and rewarding experience.

There are lots of dates available to reserve the altar flowers in loving memory or in celebration of something or someone. They are $60 per arrangement. Please contact Debi Wyatt at 678-560-2437 or debi.wyatt@mtbethel.org for more information.

Do you like to garden, but do not know a lily from a lichen, a rose from a rototiller, or a blue bird from a bluebell?

Do you like to "get down and dirty" or prefer a stroll through a lovely garden "to smell the roses"?  If so, then Mt. Bethel is starting a garden club.  We plan to start small with a program on container gardening, and a little maintenance in our Mt. Bethel gardens.  But we would like to have you tell us what kind of gardening you want to do and to learn about. We are planning our first meeting in August. So if you are enthusiastic about plants, gardens, and the environment, please contact Jennie Rogers for more information at sealevel888@yahoo.com.

Mothers of Preschoolers (MOPS) is looking for a loving individual to keep children during their meetings from 9:30am to 12:15pm on one Monday each month until the end of the school year. This is a paid position. For more information, contact Rachel Taylor at 678-324-1624.

The Mt. Bethel Library receives lots of book donations - some of them are left anonymously. The Library volunteers would like to acknowledge your donation. Please consider leaving your name with your book donations so they can send you a note of thanks.
