Message from the Minister

Way to Go, Coach!!

Last week, the AJC ran a story about "our" Roger Kaiser under the heading, "Who Has Inspired You?"  The article included the following:

At 72, two-time cancer survivor Roger Kaiser could justify taking it easy. But anything connected to a quiet retirement holds no allure for the Marietta man who has built a lifetime around basketball.

In 1960, Kaiser was the first basketball All-American from Georgia Tech. He turned down a change to turn pro, opting instead to finish his education. . . .

Kaiser eventually married his girlfriend, Beverly, and they have been married 50 years and had three children. Along the way, Kaiser played briefly in the American Basketball League in New York, ran a summer camp for kids, coached at Georgia Tech and Decatur High School, and eventually wound up spending 20 years at the University of West Georgia and another 17 years at Life University.

In 2002, just when it looked as though Kaiser was going to give up life on the courts, Mt. Bethel Christian Academy called.
"I said, 'I'm about worn out!' So they hired someone else. Before he got onboard, they changed their minds and called me again." said Kaiser. 'I said OK, but I didn't think I'd last more than three years. ' "
It's been eight years since Kaiser started working with middle schoolers as Mt. Bethel's basketball coach and athletic director.
"I learn as much from the kids at Mt. Bethel as I teach them," said Kaiser. "They're much younger than I'm used to, but they're lots of fun to be around. They keep me young and that's good for me."

Roger and Beverly Kaiser have organized an annual golf tournament in honor of one of their 10 grandchildren who has cerebral palsy. For the last five years, "Lexi's Game" has raised funds for special needs children . . .

Roger, Beverly - we are delighted to be associated with you! Thank you for all you do to make our Academy and Church stronger and finer. God bless you.

Congregation, please join me in expressing our gratitude to folks like the Kaisers, who make a difference for Christ in the lives of our students.

The altar flowers are given to the Glory of God; in celebration of the 60th wedding anniversary of Lyn & Henry Ahrenhold, with love by their four children and eight grandchildren; and in loving memory of Eddie Gustafson on our anniversary, given by Barbara Gustafson.

The rosebuds on the altar are in honor of the births of Blakely Susan Alfonso, daughter of Chris & Jennifer Alfonso and granddaughter of Ralph & Brenda Gardner, on March 11, 2011; Emma Katherine Clennan, daughter of Kevin & Naomi Clennan and granddaughter of Phillip & Ruth Ann Sonke, on March 11, 2011; Sloan Ellen Everett, daughter of Stuart & Christy Everett and granddaughter of Don Hiers, on March 14, 2011; Amelia Annalyn Herring, daughter of Daniel & Shannon Herring and granddaughter of Sherry & Ralph Reed and Lee & Rebecca Herring, on March 10, 2011; and Ashton Cruz Unruh, son of Josh & Erika Unruh and grandson of Ed & Lynn Strickland, on March 7, 2011.

The Paschal Candle burns in honor of the life of Claude Henderson, now living in the Father's House. The Paschal Candle also burns in honor of the baptisms of Tyler Ward Blankenship, son of Lee & Lindsay Blankenship; and Whitney Ola Young, daughter of Brett & Elizabeth Young.

Recently hospitalized: Mara Canning, Ron Davenport, Jim Hindman, Gloria Hutcheson, Cliff Taylor, Terry Vick.

We extend Christian sympathy to Eddie, Crissie, David, Richard, & Rebecca Carswell in the loss of Crissie's father, Gordon C. Berry; to Larry & Margaret Kiefer in the loss of Margaret's mother, Lydia Bear; and to Mike, Becky, Jeff & Kristy  Patellis in the loss of Mike's mother, Blanche Hendrix.  May God hold you in the palm of His hand during this time of grief.
