Mt. Bethel UMC - Compassion Into Action
Message From The Minister

Lent

The holy season of Lent is a season of forty days, not counting Sundays, which begins on Ash Wednesday and ends on Holy Saturday (the day before Easter). The Lenten season is a preparation for celebrating Easter. Historically, Lent began as a period of fasting and preparation for Baptism by converts and then became a time for penance by all Christians.

The Christian Faith finds itself under attack everywhere, and perhaps is weaker today than it has ever been. Secularism has weakened the faith of today's average believer to the extent that the Barna Research Group describes today's generation as "less theologically literate" than previous generations. This is glaringly apparent in today's society as some churches are embracing "Pluralism" to the point of seeking to "blend" all faiths into one. It's the old adage "all roads lead to God," therefore Jesus Christ is not unique. Some "go along to get along" churches even call themselves "Chrislim," blending Christian and Muslim.

Consider these differences between the Allah of the Quran and the one true God of the Bible. The god of Islam is remote, and not intimate (Surah 112). Allah does not have a son (Surah 2:116), is not a Trinity (Surah 5:72) and does not love unconditionally (Surah 8:53). In Islam, Jesus is simply a prophet, and emphatically is not the Son of God (Surah 5:72) and the angel Gabriel is the Holy Spirit (Surah 2:193). Islam rejects the Fatherhood of God, the divinity of the Son, and the person of the Holy Spirit. One cannot change the nature of the God of the Bible, without the "god" you are presenting. The "Chrislim Church" is simply another form of Baal worship . . . false and unacceptable.

Let's keep Lent a holy season as we strive to become more Biblically literate and worship the one, true, God.

                        Randy

Stephen Ministry Support - There are times when each of us needs someone to listen to us and pray with us about situations we are facing.  Stephen Ministers are trained, caring members of Mt Bethel. They provide distinctively Christian one-on-one care to those who are experiencing a situation that has placed them in need of someone to listen. This may include births, deaths, serious or terminal illness, family crisis, divorce, problems with children, caring for aging parents, financial problems - literally any challenging situation.  Stephen Ministers work with people of the same gender and offer Christian care and while maintaining strict confidentially. They help by listening and sharing God's love to help with the confusion, stress, hurt, or loneliness. Please call John Semler at 770-937-0321 or Kibbie Jones at 678-560-7230 for more information.

Pastoral Care

The Divorce Support/Recovery Group meets each Wednesday at 6:30 in the "H" house. This group is for those going through one of the most heart-wrenching tragedies that a person can face. Divorce is not the end of one's world, but it can sure seem like it. When people go through such hardships, they need a support/recovery group where they can find acceptance, feel comfortable with, learn from, and have the opportunity to express their emotions with a group that understands. Trained facilitators help those grieving the hurt of rejection and loss, and confused as to their place in life as a divorcee. Together we help each other gain confidence and restore self esteem. One need not be a member of Mt. Bethel to be a part of this group, so tell others.  For more information, please call Jeanette Imboden at 678-699-5755, or Mike Gilliam at 404-372-7668.
