Mt. Bethel UMC - Compassion Into Action
Message From The Minister

I must admit that when I first received the call from Jody Ray to share my testimony with the 8,000+ member congregation of Mt. Bethel I was very uncomfortable, but then I was reminded of what we are taught...often times God wants us to be uncomfortable and that being a Christian is not supposed to be easy, so here it goes...
When I was 11 years old I was severely burned on my left arm and back in a go- cart accident.  I spent over 2 months in the hospital and subsequent years in physical therapy.  Looking back on that event it has turned out to be the defining moment in my life. Why, because I came to know God.  Upon reflection, I can see the ways God saved me during that time and believe me there were lots of them, but none more clearly than the night Jesus spoke to me. I was lying in the bed watching the Twilight Zone, my father asleep on a cot next to me as he was every night (Mom had the day shift), when suddenly I heard a voice tell me that it was time to straighten my arm. Mind you that my arm had gotten infected and while the infection was gone, the arm had atrophied and had been immobile for almost 2 months. I listened to the voice and went to work on it over the course of the night.  I pushed it a little at a time until it was straight and remarkably it was not excruciating to do it. I then woke my father and showed him what I could do.  He broke down in tears and the next morning it seemed all of the hospital was in my room in awe. Why? I later learned I was to have my arm amputated because they did not think it would move again! I went on to play sports and have full use of my arm.
From that moment to this day, I have always known that Jesus had spoken to me and saved me. However, even after an event like that, there was a time in my life that I lived away from the church and I did not attend regularly. I never doubted my faith, but honestly did not live as He would want me to.  Fast forward to the birth of my daughter. I was 32 years old and God had been working on me, but it was not until she was born did I hear him loud and clear. My wife had tried to get me to go back to the church with little success. You know - I had better things to do on Sunday mornings. After all, I worked all week and needed a break. When she was born, as with most things, she did it in a dramatic fashion. Long story short, we nearly lost her. As she got older and began to talk, she was very inquisitive about what those buildings were with the steeples on top.  Every time we would pass a church she would say, "We need to go there."   OK, I am dense, but not that dense. God was again speaking to me - it was time to come home. So we did and here we are, but that was just the first step.
Once back in church I sat in the pew on a regular basis, but I felt like I needed to be or do something more. My wife and I spoke about the desire to get more involved. We volunteered to teach Sunday school, coach, and work on a Habitat house, but still there was something missing. Then it happened - Randy stood up that Sunday and talked about the homeless and it spoke to my heart. We immediately began trying to figure out how to get actively involved.  My wife marched into the CAC and said, "You need drivers? My husband will do it!" Thankfully they took her up on it! It has been wonderful for me and I have made new friends, and I feel much more fulfilled. I was, and still am, that guy sitting in the pew searching for ways to use the gifts that God set me aside for at 11 years old, but it took this ministry to get me moving. This is a great congregation and I would encourage those of you who are searching for ways to get involved to listen with your hearts. To find ways to serve God - by serving others. I promise you will get back tenfold what you give.
                        - - Trey Holder

Pastoral Care

The Divorce Support/Recovery Group meets each Wednesday at 6:30 in the H House. This group is for those going through one of the most heart-wrenching tragedies that a person can face. Divorce is not the end of one's world, but it can sure seem like it. When people go through such hardships, they need a support/recovery group where they can find acceptance, feel comfortable with, learn from, and have the opportunity to express their emotions with a group that understands.  Trained facilitators help those grieving the hurt of rejection and loss, and confused as to their place in life as a divorcee.  Together we help each other gain confidence and restore self esteem. One need not be a member of Mt Bethel to be a part of this group, so tell others.  For more information, please call Jeanette Imboden at 678-699-5755, or Mike Gillam at 404-372-7668.

Contact Al at 770-238-8846 or Linda at 770-630-6212
